Cedar Falls Utilities is currently recruiting for a full-time Instrument & Control Technician to join our Electric Production department. This position installs, calibrates, repairs, tests, maintains and troubleshoots plant electronic and pneumatic controls, indicating, recording equipment and electrical equipment up to 12kV, used in a high pressure steam plant and combustion turbine generating stations.

The Instrument & Control Technician works under general supervision of the Electric Production Manager.

Compensation & Benefits
- CFU offers on-the-job training and will enroll employees into an 8-step apprenticeship program, consisting of classroom and field training.
- Non-commission, straight hourly based pay structure.
- Starting wage is based upon individual qualifications. Full position rate is $50.36/hour once a candidate can successfully perform the essential job functions.
- Typical work schedule is Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:00pm with two 20 minute breaks.

- Assists the Plant Electrician by performing acceptance tests of new systems and maintenance of switchgear and electrical equipment including circuit breakers, voltage regulators, tap changers, unit substations, AC and DC motors, and exciters.
- Assists or acts for station operators in emergencies as required; coordinates activities with other operations staff; maintains records and an inventory of spare parts.
Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes positive relations with customers, co-workers and management.
Works from drawings; calibrates transducers and indicating meters; completes test reports; documents field changes; and supplies as built drawings.
Installs, maintains, tests, and calibrates pneumatic and electronic equipment including pressure, temperature, level and flow transmitters, recorders, relays, and positioners; maintains electronic water analysis monitors; maintains turbine supervisory instrumentation, and tests combustion control systems.
Applies theory in electronic maintenance of control systems and circuitry, indicating equipment, recording equipment, and process control computer(s) DCS, PLC’s, SCADA, CEMS.
Education:
- The equivalent of a vocational or college degree program in electronic engineering technology with strong emphasis on electronic circuit design and maintenance.
- A minimum of four years experience in electrical and mechanical maintenance work in a high pressure steam and combustion turbine electric generating plant or the completion of a related apprenticeship training program; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the ability to perform the job functions as defined.
- Required to have good driving record and valid Iowa driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of: The fundamental principles of electricity, electronic devices and computers; knowledge of the methods and practices involved in testing, calibrating, repairing and maintaining a variety of electronic equipment and devices. Considerable knowledge of practices, methods, equipment, machine and hand tools used in plant maintenance work; knowledge of occupational hazards connected with maintenance work.
- Ability to: Read and understand electrical drawings including schematics, wiring diagrams and blueprints; write computer programs; familiarity with the operation of micro-computers; ability and desire to exercise tact and diplomacy; establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- The physical demands described here are characteristic of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must occasionally lift at least 50 pounds, be alert to ergonomic hazards and possess the capability to climb ladders and/or stairs. The employee must also be capable of working in conditions with rough terrain and awkward/difficult positions. This job requires a high activity level.
This position requires a hearing exam and a pulmonary lung function test, which is required for respirator use.
