The Opportunity
The Department of Writing and Rhetoric (DWR), in the College of Arts and Humanities (CAH) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invites applications for three, 9-month non-tenure earning instructors or Lecturers. The anticipated start date is August 8, 2024.
DWR is committed to innovative research and teaching that addresses challenges related to composition, rhetoric, and literacy in academic, workplace, civic, and community settings. These positions carry a 4/4 course teaching load each academic year, with an opportunity to teach each summer. The selected candidates will work full-time in our writing studies focused first-year composition program (ENC 1101/1102) with opportunity to teach business, professional, editing, and/or medical writing courses at the undergraduate upper-level for the B.A. in Writing and Rhetoric. Teaching modes may include face-to-face, mediated/hybrid, and online. All faculty in the department report to the department chair.
The Department of Writing and Rhetoric (DWR) is one of seven academic units in CAH at UCF. As an independent writing department, DWR is the academic home to 12 tenure-earning faculty members, 31 full-time non-tenure earning instructors and lecturers, two postdoctoral scholars, and 15 graduate teaching assistants. The department supports a comprehensive, vertical writing instruction that includes a first-year composition program, an undergraduate major (B.A.) and minor, and a graduate program with both an M.A. and certificate in professional writing. The department has recently added an undergraduate certificate in Medical Writing and Rhetoric alongside the existing Public and Professional Writing certificate. The department houses the Center for Writing Excellence that encompasses the University Writing Center and the Writing Across the Curriculum program. Our first-year writing program serves approximately 6,000 students every year. First-year writing courses are driven by collaboratively developed student learning outcomes that value equity, access, and sustainability. Moreover, first-year writing curriculum is informed by guiding principles developed from theory and research in rhetoric and composition. Our talented writing faculty have a range of expertise in rhetoric and composition and draw from various approaches to teach writing.

Minimum Qualifications:
- An M.A. (for an instructor) or terminal degree (for a lecturer) in rhetoric, English, or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Experience teaching college-level writing.
- A demonstrated commitment to working with students from diverse, multilingual backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduate coursework in Composition Histories, Theories, and/or Pedagogy.
- Pedagogical experience, coursework in, and/or experience in business/professional writing, medical rhetorics, and/or editing.
- Experience teaching of writing in online learning environments following the field's best practices and/or certification in online writing instruction.
- Demonstrated innovation and/or excellence in teaching.
- Experience teaching a range of diverse writer populations, particularly multilingual writers.
- Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Rhetoric and Composition.
