Qualifications:
Pedagogical Knowledge: An effective coach should have a deep understanding and uphold the fidelity of the Elementary School curriculum, teaching strategies, and pedagogical approaches.
This enables them to provide relevant and meaningful support to teachers.
Communication Skills: Good communication skills are crucial for an Instructional Coach. They need to be able to listen actively to teachers; concerns, provide constructive feedback, and effectively convey instructional strategies.
Empathy and Emotional Intelligence: Understanding the challenges teachers face and empathizing with their experiences is essential. A coach who can build rapport and trust with teachers will be more successful in supporting their growth.
Data Analysis Skills: Being able to analyze student data and assessment results is crucial for identifying areas of improvement and tailoring coaching support to meet specific needs.
Collaboration and Teamwork: Instructional coaching is a collaborative process. A coach should work closely with teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders to create a supportive environment for professional development.
Reflective Practice: Encouraging teachers to reflect on their practice and guiding them through self-assessment is a key role of an Instructional Coach. This helps teachers identify areas for growth and set goals for improvement.
Modeling and Demonstrating: Demonstrating effective teaching strategies in real classroom settings can be a powerful way for coaches to support teachers; professional growth.
This may involve co-teaching or observing lessons and providing immediate feedback.
Continuous Learning: An effective Instructional Coach should stay updated on current educational research, trends, and best practices. This enables them to provide relevant and evidence-based support to teachers.
Problem-Solving Skills: Instructional coaches often encounter complex challenges in supporting teachers. The ability to analyze problems systematically and develop creative solutions is essential.
Positive Attitude and Motivation: Maintaining a positive and encouraging demeanor can help create a supportive and energizing atmosphere for professional growth among teachers.
Reports To: Building Principal
Job Goal:
The Instructional Coach will serve as an instructional leader who works closely with the building principal, teacher leaders, and district leaders to manage, support, and guide faculty in a way that strengthens student growth and development.
The Instructional Coach will provide support on issues of curriculum, instruction, formative assessment, and professional learning. The Instructional Coach will work with teachers and build relationships to help create a positive and supportive learning
community.
Performance Responsibilities:
1. Maintain familiarity with current educational issues and trends through a process of ongoing professional development.
2. Ensure alignment exists among instruction and assessment in the classroom. The teacher's interpretation of ongoing data should result in identified growth areas and be directly reflected in lesson planning and delivery.
3. Model lessons in classrooms on a bi-weekly basis or more as needed.
4. Support the instructional development of all teachers in understanding the CCSS curriculum and varied assessments, the Framework for Teaching, and data analysis.
5. Build strong relationships with teachers, administrators, and other coaches.
6. Provide direction and coordination for how the curriculum is taught consistent with District initiatives and recognized best instructional practices.
7. Assist teachers in understanding the Millburn School District 24 mission and core values.
8. Provide technical support to collaborative teams within buildings.
9. Collaborate with teams of teachers and instructional leaders to manage and utilize student data to improve the quality and scope of instruction.
10. Assist teachers with resources, materials, tools, information, etc. to support classroom instruction and planning.
11. Management and distribution of instructional resources and provide training on the use of those resources.
12. Facilitate conversations among teachers that result in a common understanding of performance standards and benchmarks.
13. Support teachers and administrators in using data to improve instruction on all levels.
14. Provide guidance to teachers in the use of data to inform instruction. This data includes the analysis of NWEA MAP, IRLA, short-cycle assessments, and IAR data. District level data that should also be considered are grade level CFA's.
15. Assist teachers with planning and pacing of lessons, the development of differentiated lessons, and the selection of best practices to meet the needs of their students.
16. Ensure alignment exists among instruction and assessment in the classroom. The teacher's interpretation of ongoing data should result in identified growth areas and be directly reflected in lesson planning and delivery.
17. Support teachers by helping with the ?strategic how of teaching -- share multiple instructional strategies/processes with teachers during planning times.
18. Informally observe (non-evaluative) lessons and provide feedback for a teacher's professional growth and students' success.
19. Develop staff members' knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors through a variety of professional development targeted topics and designs.
20. Develop coaching plans for teachers to ensure student improvement.
21. Utilize Adult Learning Theory to motivate adult learners to improve professional practice.
22. Contribute to the development systems and structures to improve teacher practice within schools.
23. Provide job-embedded informal professional learning beyond the coaching responsibility.
24. Attend summer training sessions.
25. Complete any other duties as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 180 contracted days.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the evaluation plan.
