The Biology department provides educational experiences and opportunities to all students interested in studying the field of biology and preparing for careers in life science and the health occupations. We address all levels of biological organization from cells to ecosystems and prepare students to become the problem solvers of tomorrow.
Under general direction of the Executive Dean of STEM, the Instructional & Classroom Support Technician 3 will perform instructional support of biology courses including microbiology, anatomy & physiology, and general biology for both majors and non-majors. Support for these courses involves the use of scientific, technical and/or academic subject matter knowledge.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Prepare and set out materials necessary to perform laboratory experiments, including but not limited to: sourcing and preparation of animal and plant specimens, preparation of media and solutions for microbiology and basic molecular & cellular biology, cultivation and storage of bacterial cell lines up to and including BSL2. Communicate with faculty regarding lab planning to ensure supplies, equipment, tools, and software needed for classes are properly prepared and available.
  • Design and update lab protocols and procedures.
  • Perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and perform or coordinate necessary repairs.
  • Budget and inventory coordination including supply and equipment orders. Maintain computerized inventory of supplies and make recommendations to budget authority.
  • Prepare paperwork for expenditures. Evaluate equipment and supplies for needs and "best value" purchases. Secure equipment bids where appropriate. Review and analyze instrumentation from various vendors including in-house testing when appropriate to determine the best instrument for purchase within budget constraints.
  • Orient new faculty to labs, safety compliance, and proper use of equipment.
  • Train and provide direction to instructional/student assistants. Supervise open labs during times when class is not in session.
  • Manage collection and disposal of hazardous and biohazardous waste generated by the biology labs and stockroom. Ensure a safe laboratory environment for instructors and students.
  • Maintain "right to know" files, safety orientation sheets, inventory lists, and biohazard/chemical waste management documentation. Work with chemical hygiene officer to maintain a safety plan.

Qualifications
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree with major study in a basic applied science, AND
  • Two years of full-time experience as an Instructional & Classroom Support Tech 2 (or equivalent); OR
  • Equivalent education/experience.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Microsoft Office Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word programs
  • Chemical hygiene/bloodborne pathogen safety
  • Best practices for safely working with BSL2 organisms and waste management
  • Coordination, repair and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation
  • College policies and processes regarding student scientific instruction

  • Time management, organization, and ability to meet competing deadlines/priorities
  • Maintaining safe lab environments, and working safely with program equipment/supplies
  • Maintaining/documenting and sharing appropriate safety standards in lab and Classroom environments
  • Entering and/or retrieving data accurately in computerized record keeping systems
  • Handling difficult and sensitive situations, using sound independent judgment within College/legal guidelines
  • Writing/editing/proofreading clear and concise materials resulting in effective oral and written communication with individuals inside and/or outside of the College
  • Establishing/maintaining effective working relationships at all organizational levels
  • Working with a diverse groups of students, staff, and the public in a friendly, courteous and helpful manner

Conditions of Employment
PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The College is currently providing services in a mixed modality of operations (both online and in-person services are offered). This position will perform work in a standard office setting, use standard office equipment and physically attend meetings both on and off campus, using the ability to communicate in person or through appropriate means. Please note, there may be opportunities for online work depending on program or area needs. If authorized for online work, employees will need to provide their own workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT/SALARY:
This position is allocated to pay range 47, under the Washington State Office of Financial Management higher education salary schedule. Salary placement for new employees is determined by the College. This position works 40 hours per week, with schedule dependent upon department needs. Hiring of this position is contingent on available funding as determined by the College President.
