Salary will be determined based on certification:
Entry Salary Inspector I: $35,181
Entry Salary Inspector II: $37,432
Entry Salary Inspector III: $39,832
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of the position is to inspect building construction, renovations, and mobile home installations for compliance with applicable building codes and ordinances, to provide technical interpretation of codes and regulations as needed, to prepare and maintain all required documentation, and to perform related work as required.
Requirements:ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position, however, management may assign additional tasks as necessary.
- Performs routine inspections of commercial and residential building construction, renovations, and mobile home installations for compliance with applicable building (structural, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, accessibility) and related codes and ordinances.
- Prepares inspection reports; prepares and issues notices of correction and stop work orders as necessary.
- Explains, interprets and provides guidance regarding applicable codes and compliance requirements to contractors, engineers, architects, developers, property owners and others.
- Follows up on each case to verify corrections have been made to comply with codes, and maintains records related to inspections.
- Receives and responds to public inquiries, concerns and complaints regarding assigned cases and general department procedures.
- Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of office policies and procedures; handling or using machines requiring moderate instruction and experience such as computers, software programs such as word processing, spreadsheets or custom applications.
Requires giving information, guidance or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment.
Excellent customer service skills.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The educational requirement for this position is: High School diploma/GED.
Related experience required: 1 year building inspection profession or related field or an acceptable equivalent combination of experience and education.
Experience may be substituted for education.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:
Certifications, licenses, professional designations, or other qualifications required for this position include:
Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
Must obtain certification as a Residential Building Inspector within 12 Months of hire, and annually obtain additional certifications.
Certifications, licenses, professional designations, or other qualifications preferred for this position include:
Two years of experience in the building inspection profession or related field.
Five years of construction background.

Vision Requirements:
This position has the following special vision requirements:
- Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less)
- Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)
- Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors)
- Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down or to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point)
- Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships)
- Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus)
