The Prince George's County Government Office of the Sheriff is seeking qualified applicants to fill an Inspector General position, grade G33, within its Executive Support Services Division.
About the Position:
This is an advanced executive level professional administrative work of a difficult and diverse nature that is performed within the Office of the Sheriff. The incumbent in this class works under the broadest of guidelines and supervision and represents the Office of the Sheriff. Assignments are characteristically of a sensitive nature, frequently involving shifting priorities and involve significant local, state and/or federal policies and guidelines. Due to the level of work and assignments, extensive coordinative and/or supervisory skills are required. General supervision is provided directly by the Sheriff and Chief Assistant Sheriff.What You'll Do:
  • Regularly consults with the Sheriff or designee to exchange information regarding priorities, progress, or problems, and recommends appropriate corrective action or process improvement/enhancement to policies/changes to practices.
  • Reviews policy proposals by other agencies and government entities, as requested, in a timely manner, and prepares any requested comments and recommendations concerning proposals.
  • Interacts closely with the Office of Law regarding issues dealing with legal and legislative affairs.
  • Develops, prepares, and presents training material for the Office of the Sheriff and the public.
  • Represents the Sheriff at appropriate local, regional, and national meetings, conferences and forums in a manner which reflects positively on the County.
  • Efficiently and thoroughly researches complex legal problems and complies legal or other memoranda.
  • Maintains an extensive knowledge of issues confronting the Office of the Sheriff and other public sector agencies and be reasonably prepared to advise on legal questions as they arise.
  • Review standards established by the Maryland Police Training Commission to ensure instructional programs meet or exceed minimum criteria.
  • Appears at public events or forums and other meetings and renders advice in a manner that is easily understood by the attending audience.
  • Counsels individuals and civic and private business organizations on the status, intent and/or interpretation of pending and passed legislation, impact of legislation and other significant matters.
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.
What You'll Need:
  • Master's Degree in Public or Business Administration, or related field.
  • Three (3) years of responsible experience in governmental activities to be specified based on position assignment.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's Degree in law enforcement administration, criminal justice, or a related field, or Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
  • Four (4) years of experience advising senior law enforcement leadership on issues related to accountability, adherence to best practices, policies, procedures, and operations; pending personnel investigations and disciplinary matters; and critical incidents including in-custody deaths, deputy-involved shootings, and significant use of force incidents.
  • Six (6) years of experience analyzing and applying laws, regulations, policies, and procedures related to law enforcement.
  • Four (4) years of experience implementing, directing, leading, and measuring the effectiveness of programs, initiatives, and procedures.

DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY: Applicants will be selected from a temporary register of eligible candidates, which will become effective approximately four (4) weeks after the closing date. Once a selection has been made, the register will expire.
ELIGIBILITY TO WORK:
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles and methods of public administration and local government.
  • Extensive knowledge of management practices and administrative and legislative processes.
  • Extensive knowledge of the functional area to which assigned.
  • Ability to prepare, interpret and evaluation proposals and modifications.
  • Ability to coordinate a diverse range of assignments, being sensitive to the needs of the agencies concerned.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and be particularly skilled in speaking before groups.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with governmental, legislative, community and business groups.
