Job Summary
Join our dynamic team and play a pivotal role as an Inspections Supervisor for Utility Safety and Education! The purpose of this position is to plan, direct, and coordinate the City Inspection Divisions. This may include the inspection of private development and public works infrastructure. This is accomplished by supervising subordinate inspectors; assigning inspectors according to individual capabilities and meeting with inspectors to help with job problems, contractors, citizen confrontations, or complaints; providing correspondences, and reviewing plans. Other duties include facilitating operational analysis and improvements; and interacting with other City employees and citizens. Apply today with The City of Grand Prairie!
Essential Job Functions
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Supervises inspectors by observing and monitoring work tasks in all phases of construction projects; providing feedback to employees; evaluating work performance; assisting employees to correct deficiencies; resolving personnel issues; and selecting and training the inspection staff.
  • Assigns and approves overtime for weekends, holidays, and approves vacation, leave requests, and payroll worksheets.
  • Always ensuring job site safety
  • Maintain inventory of supplies needed for inspectors.
  • Facilitates operational analysis and improvements by reviewing, researching, evaluating, recommending, and implementing procedural improvements.
  • Budget and requisition materials and supplies to maintain efficient inspection operations.
  • Manages contracts for three construction materials inspection and testing firms, assigning projects, distributing workload.
  • Participate in product review and specifications revision committees with various departments.
  • Participate in construction project pre and final walk-through inspections.
  • All other duties as assigned by a supervisor/manager within your department/division.

Utility (Safety and Education)
  1. Provides instructor training to employees on TCEQ approved training course material resulting in obtaining TCEQ licensing. Maintain inventory of supplies for training purposes.
  2. Conduct training for CDL Class B and CDL Class A and other applicable endorsements.
  3. Performs routine and random safety inspections for Utility job sites.
  4. Respond to and check the safety of workers for after-hours calls for emergency repairs.
  5. Reviews and determines classification and preventability of vehicle and equipment incidents. Leads the Incident Review Committee and sends notifications of the final Incident Review Committee decisions. Presents information to appeals board when needed.
  6. Works with City Attorney's Office on cases as required and may act as an expert witness as needed.
  7. Conduct Monthly Safety Training: Ensures safety by training crews on proper use of equipment including self-contained breathing apparatus, climbing harness, fall arrest, and gas monitors, enforcing safety aspects of handling various chemicals and gases.
  8. Maintains Utility Staff certifications and license records and assigns staff to classes based on individual staff needs.
  9. Provide Annual Training Schedule (January to December) of classes, certification, and training.

Minimum Qualifications
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education: Associate or equivalent.
  • Experience: Five years' experience in a related field.
  • Licenses: Valid Driver's License required.
    1. Utility Safety and Education: Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement & Hazardous Material Endorsement
  • Certifications Required:
    1. Utility Safety and Education: TCEQ Water Distribution Class C, and/or Wastewater Collections Class II, OSHA 30-hour training course (or obtain in 12 months) and Traffic Control and Barricade Plan (or obtain in 12 months)
