Job description

Nashville General Hospital is hiring for an Inpatient Coder for Health Information Services as a full-time job in Nashville, Tennessee.

Shift: Day Shift
As an Inpatient Coder, you will be coding and reviewing electronic patient charts and physician notes for accuracy. Position will be remote and the candidate must be available to work 40 hours per week.
Inpatient Coder Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Reviews medical records to identify diagnoses, CPT procedures and PCS procedures relative to the patient’s encounter.
  • Selects the principal diagnosis and principal procedure, along with other diagnoses and procedures using UHDDS definition. Ensures appropriate DRG assignment.
  • Abstracts appropriate information from the medical record based on the guidelines provided by the hospital and after a thorough review of the medical record.
  • Solicits clarification from the physician regarding ambiguous or conflicting documentation in the medical record using guidelines provided by the hospital.
  • Ensure all coding complies with the ethical coding standards/guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains strictest confidentiality; adheres to all Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines/regulations.
  • Participate in ongoing coding education and support coding accuracy activities.

Proficiencies:

  • Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pathology and laboratory medicine, coding guidelines for ICD-10, CM, PCS, CPT, Modifiers, etc.
  • Knowledge of current and developing issues, trends in medical coding procedures requirements, and be able to research complex issues as needed.
  • Knowledge of legal, regulatory, and policy compliance issues related to medical coding and billing procedures, and documentation including CMS guidelines.
  • Proficient computer skills using MS-Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems including Paragon, eClinical Works, Cerner, Computer Assisted Coding (CAC) and others.
  • Serve as a knowledge resource and mentor on coding issues.
  • Meet required productivity standards and maintain minimum accuracy rate.
  • Must reside and be legal to work in the U.S.


Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree in Health Information Management and/or Bachelors' Degree in Health Information Management preferred.
  • Must possess one of the following AAPC/AHIMA certifications: Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience as an Inpatient Coder at an acute care or academic teaching facility required or successful completion of Inpatient Coding apprenticeship program.
  • Reliable high-speed internet service, Home office or private, secure work area required
  • Self-sufficient with strong analytical and research skills
  • Responsible, responsive, and dependable
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Capacity to work effectively and collaboratively with other healthcare professionals
