What Health System Pharmacy contributes to Cardinal Health
Pharmacy Operations is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective coordination of Cardinal Health's pharmacy operations that service acute care hospitals, hospital retail customers, ambulatory care and alternate site facilities, oncology and cardiology practices as well as retail customers.
Health System Pharmacy is responsible for providing customized pharmacy program solutions that reduce costs and improve patient care quality for hospitals, health systems and other integrated healthcare providers may also consult with and advise healthcare team on prescribed medications, supplies and related processes.

Job Summary

This position reports to the Director of Pharmacy or Clinical Manager. The Infusion Pharmacist must have a Pharmacy degree from an accredited Pharmacy School and be licensed in the State of Maine or eligible for licensure in Maine.

The Infusion Pharmacist is responsible for the oversight of the preparation and compounding, order verification, and dispensing of pharmaceuticals according to the laws and regulations governing pharmacists and the practice of pharmacy within oncology or sterile compounding. The Infusion Pharmacist is responsible for the optimization of drug therapy by identifying, resolving, and preventing drug-related problems and adverse drug events.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the clinical pharmacy oncology services and ambulatory care pharmacy services.

  • Working knowledge of how to safely work with hazardous drugs, USP 800.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of sterile technique, USP 797.

  • Formulate and implement departmental policies/procedures for IV/Infusion to standardize pharmacy processes and ensure compliance with State, Federal and CMS standards.

  • Work with the infusion services and oncology coordinators to ensure and maintain efficient customer service, resolve issues, address concerns etc.

  • Able to incorporate current standards of practice into outpatient and oncology practices.

  • Evaluate weekly “needs” by reviewing patient schedules, ensuring quality and efficient delivery of medication.

  • Provides clinical drug information to physicians and nursing.

  • Able to identify potential issues related to the delivery of out-patients infusion including law, regulations and reimbursement.

  • Establish dispensing guidelines for new infusion/oncology medications.

  • Understand the billing process that applies to the out-patient and oncology setting.

  • Maintain orderly documentation and update patient files.

  • Evaluate and coordinate usage, Use cost-effective measures in the delivery of patient care.

  • Checks technician work carefully and accurately.

  • Screens medication orders for appropriateness.

  • Provides care appropriate to the age of patients served based on principles of growth and development and life stages.

  • Performs critical dosing calculations for all patients of all age groups.

  • Supervises support personnel-directs, educates, and checks technicians work when required.

  • Understand the special considerations in compounding and stability related to the use of antineoplastics and the use of home infusion therapies.

  • Maintains adequate supply of pharmaceuticals and related materials.

  • Demonstrates confidentiality regarding patient and co-worker information according to PHI level of access.

  • Demonstrates awareness of safety measures.

  • Manages time for orderly completion of additional duties.

  • Maintains knowledge of department dosing/monitoring protocols.

  • Participates in compounding of extemporaneous preparation of medication.

  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in pharmacy or PharmD.

  • Must be a “good standing” licensed Pharmacist in the state of Maine, or able to obtain licensure.

  • Previous hospital pharmacy or IV infusion/oncology experience preferred.

  • Previous IV therapy experience preferred.

  • Board of Pharmacy Specialties Certification preferred.

  • Maintains active membership in American Society of Health-System Pharmacists or other Pharmacy-related State or National organization.

  • Three years related Hospital Clinical Pharmacy experience and/or Postgraduate Year One Pharmacy Residency preferred.
