Duties

As a direct care ICN the nurse is responsible and accountable for developing and implementing comprehensive patient care for the adult/geriatric hematology, oncology and medical patient population assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating activities and programs. These programs at the unit and service level improve the delivery of patient care and staff performance. The ICN demonstrates a broad perspective of clinical practice and its relationship to unit, service, and hospital goals and objectives. The ICN independently uses sound judgment in making decisions regarding responsibilities and provides leadership to interdisciplinary groups at all levels. Leadership in decision-making at the service level is expected. Excellent interpersonal skills are essential as the ICN requires minimal guidance except in unusual situations. Competency is demonstrated in performing clinical and management skills commensurate with assignment as documented on the ICN.
All nurses in the Infusion Clinic will be required to complete:
  • Chemotherapy Biotherapy: Fundamentals of Administration- within 3 months of hire
  • ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Certificate Course- after one year of hire
  • ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Biotherapy Certificate Renewal Course- every two years following initial Chemotherapy/Biotherapy certification.
The nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation is applied in an ongoing, systematic manner, which begins with the initial patient contact and continues through the post delivery of care. Thus, the nursing care encompasses a broad range of activities based on patient needs. They may include pre-appointment assessments, patient and family education, administration of medications, telephone triage, discharge planning, post-infusion follow-up, staff orientation, and preventative health and disease management. The nurse organizes care delivery in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team in a manner that promotes continuity and accountability for patient care.
The Infusion ClinicNurse Educator {ICNE) is directly accountable to the unit's Nurse Manager. While working in Partnership with the Nurse Manager {NM) and Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM), functions as a nurse, educator and coordinator for the Infusion Clinic Nurses. The ICNE is a partner, leader, and actively involved in education of unit nursing staff during orientation, ongoing needs, and in sustaining excellence in nursing practice on the unit. The ICNE demonstrates superior clinical expertise, leadership and creative approaches to management of complex ethical care. In addition, applies clinical skills necessary to identify, coordinate and /or identify discipline-specific education. The ICNE assists NM and ANM in evaluating current practice needs of RN staff through observation, audits, and data collection and develops a plan for educating and maintaining consistent education needs. The ICNE will facilitate the performance improvement (Pl) process and promote goals related to key clinical outcomes, and the adherence to specialty recommendations of care and standards of practice from facility accrediting bodies, organizations, and directives focused on evidence-based nursing practice. As a registered nurse, the ICNE is responsible for and collaborates with the NM and ANM in the professional development of clinically competent staff. Educational materials and forums will be developed by the ICNE in collaboration with the NM and ANM. The ICNE collaborates with Nurse Educators from other units and the education department to promote nursing excellence throughout the organization.

    Qualifications
    Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
    • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
    Preferred Experience:
    • BSN preferred
    • MSN preferred
    • Infusion experience preferred
    • 3-5 years nursing experience preferred
    • Chemo administration experience preferred
    • Oncology/Hematology experience preferred
    Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
    • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
    • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
    • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
    • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
    • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

    Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting.
