Job description

Summary
The Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) Consultant will support Early Childhood educators and direct service providers in the state who are working with children with challenging behaviors or who are working with parents who are experiencing challenges. Consultees may include home visitors, early interventionists, and Early Childhood educators in childcare, Head Start or district preschool settings.
Responsibilities
  • Support educators and service providers working with children exhibiting challenging behaviors, experiencing trauma, demonstrating Mental Health concerns, or those at-risk for expulsion or suspension from a program
  • Support service providers and educators working with parents who are experiencing challenges, such as depression, substance misuse, trauma, violence, or other stressors by addressing the needs of their child(ren) with challenging behaviors
  • Implement strategies to prevent and minimize the impact of Mental Health disorders by assisting families in accessing needed services, such as substance use treatment, shelter for survivors of domestic violence, parenting classes, and health care
  • Address issues of implicit bias around exclusionary discipline practices
  • Ability to use hybrid model of virtual and on-site consultation to work effectively with Early Childhood personnel throughout the state or designated regions
  • Collect relevant consultation data and submit it regularly for reporting purposes
  • Participate in recommended professional development opportunities to increase skills and knowledge base, including the Pyramid Model for challenging behavior
  • Establish working relationships with agencies and colleagues who provide support services and referrals to young children and their families
  • Participate in regular reflective supervision and case consultation with designated clinical staff

The Successful Candidate
  • You are an Early Childhood professional. You have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Early Childhood or a related field. You have at least 3 years of experience working with young children as a direct service professional. You have laid a strong professional foundation in Early Childhood development and best practices.
  • You have a growth mind-set and are committed to supporting the life-long learning process of other adults. Although you are not satisfied with the status quo, you envision doing the hard and hopeful work of improving the lives of young children in Utah and the adults who care for them. You are a life-long learner who will continue your own professional development journey while supporting other Early Childhood in their work.
  • You are a skilled communicator. You have excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. You are comfortable interacting with people of all ages, ethnicities, races, abilities, and economic and educational levels.

Requirements
  • Required B.A. in the Early Childhood field. Master’s in Early Childhood, or closely related field preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working with young children as a direct service professional
  • Experience in more than one Early Childhood work sector preferred
  • Familiarity with and use of the Pyramid Model preferred (National Center for Pyramid Model Innovations (challengingbehavior.org)
  • Specialized knowledge in child development, Pyramid Model approaches, infant, toddler, child, and adult Mental Health, and the effects of stress and trauma on children
  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish preferred
  • Demonstrated skills in writing, speaking, and interpersonal communication
  • Knowledge of Windows environment and applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other software platforms that might support the work
  • Ability to collect and enter data for regular reports
  • Complete 18 contact hours of Birth to 5 e-Pyramid Model training before working with ECE providers.
  • Complete Practice-Based Coaching and Coaching PD Project training as deemed appropriate
  • Must have a reliable personal vehicle for on-site work throughout the state or designated region
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule when traveling
  • Ability to work independently, work a flexible schedule, and travel throughout the state of Utah

Compensation
$50,000 – $55,000 annual salary, depending on education level and experience. This is currently a soft-funded position for two to three years. It is supported through a subcontract under the federal Preschool Development Grant.
