ABOUT THE JOB:

The Maintenance Mechanic repairs, maintains and performs preventive/predictive maintenance on plant equipment.This position provides specialty support to the maintenance department and production departments throughout the facility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Follows all safety and company policies / procedures and promotes a safe culture
  • Complies with all OSHA safety requirements, work rules and regulations
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment
  • Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical difficulties on diesel powered heavy construction
  • and power-driven equipment including trucks, tractors, bull dozers, backhoes, diesel trucks; diagnose cause of malfunction using knowledge of electronic and mechanical test equipment.
  • Perform inspection of assigned equipment; replace or repair faulty parts and equipment.
  • Overhaul, repair, rebuild and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials and clutches; perform inspection of assigned equipment; repair and replace accessories on equipment.
  • Tune up engines by replacing ignition parts and cleaning and adjusting carburetors.
  • Diagnose and repair computerized control systems, ignition systems, power steering and cooling systems.
  • Maintain/propose standard operating procedures (SOPs) and job safety analysis(JSAs)
  • Repair, adjust and replace brake systems including disc, hydraulic and air brakes.
  • Reports machinery defects or malfunctions to supervisor
  • Records and maintains production, repair, and equipment maintenance information for CMMS applications
  • Research and order parts using purchasing protocols
  • Weld, fabricate and assemble parts and accessories for heavy equipment
  • Maintain and secure work tools
  • Clean shop and work areas
  • Regular, reliable, and predictable attendance is necessary in order to perform the essential functions of this position.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Safely operate mobile machinery certified to use
  • Research and order parts using purchasing protocols
  • Maintain and secure work tools
  • Clean shop and work areas
  • Maintain / propose standard operating procedures (SOPs) and job safety analysis(JSAs)
  • Other duties may be assigned as necessary

  • Construct and fabricate parts, using hand tools and specifications
  • Maintain and secure work tools; Clean shop and work areas
  • Safely operate mobile machinery certified to use
  • Other duties as directed and assigned
  • This position may interact within all levels of the Northwest Pipe organization. Additionally, this position may have contact with business partners, customers, vendors, visitors and / or government agencies.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Mechanic's I-II have no supervisory responsibilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent to draw and interpret bar graphs
  • Ability to apply common sense understand to carry out detailed written and oral instructions
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, and/or schedule format
  • Knowledge of predictive maintenance protocols and tools
  • Must have the ability to operate the following equipment: Hand tools, stationary equipment, vehicles
  • Must be able to use precision measuring equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions and correspondence
  • Reading gauges and watching guides
  • Ability to problem solve, troubleshoot, multitask and work independently with attention to detail
  • Ability to work against and meet deadlines
  • Must have all aspects of communications skills; interpersonal, written and verbal, for dealing with all levels of associates, and for writing reports, and reading instructions and parts manuals. Based on the requirements of the Summary of Job Purpose indicated above for each mechanic category, must also possess the following skills or aptitudes:
  • Fluid Power (pumps, valves, and pneumatics, and seals) repair and maintenance
  • Power transmission (bearings, brakes, clutches, drives, and lubrication) repair and maintenance
  • Troubleshooting
  • Hydraulics and pneumatics
  • HVAC&R
  • Use of precision measuring equipment
  • Steam generation and transmission
  • Use of test equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics
  • Ability to secure power and lock out equipment for maintenance procedures
  • Managing one's own time and taking initiative
  • Able to follow directions and meet deadlines

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Certification and or Associates Degree preferred
  • Successful completion of apprenticeship program strongly desired

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Forklift Mechanic Certification, Certification on Material Handling Equipment and or Certificate in Diesel and Heavy Machinery preferred
  • Electrical License, Plant Journeyman or higher strongly desired

Mechanic I - minimum two years experience in a heavy manufacturing environment

Mechanic II - minimum three-five years experience in a heavy manufacturing environment
