Job description

Your role at Tumi:

The Industrial Engineer, Distribution Services is responsible for supporting the VP of Operations and Logistics in designing, optimizing, and managing distribution center operations to ensure efficient and effective storage, movement, and distribution of goods. This role involves applying engineering principles to enhance operational processes, safety, and productivity within the distribution center environment.

Responsibilities:

Distribution Center Design and Layout:

  • Support VP, Operations & Logistics to plan and design distribution center layouts to optimize space utilization, accessibility, and flow of goods.
  • Work with team to determine the placement of storage racks, shelving, aisles, and workstations.
  • Ensure safety measures and ergonomic considerations are implemented into the layout design.

Process Optimization:

  • Support VP, Operations & Logistics in analyzing existing distribution center processes and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Help implement lean principles and engineering methodologies to streamline operations and reduce waste.
  • Efficiency gains in processes and procedures by utilizing time studies and motion analysis.
  • Support team in developing and implementing efficient order picking, packing, and shipping processes.

Inventory Management:

  • Ensure inventory controls are operating as expected to maintain accurate stock levels.
  • Develop strategies for efficient inventory rotation, minimizing stockouts and overstock situations.

Automation and Technology:

  • Research, evaluate, and implement distribution center automation solutions as needed to improve efficiency.
  • Manage and maintain automated material handling systems, robotics, and other technologies.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and guidelines in distribution center operations.
  • Ensure hazards are minimized and create a safe working environment for employees.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and implement changes as needed in partnership with management team.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess distribution center performance.
  • Utilize data analysis to identify trends, bottlenecks, and areas for improvement.
  • Prepare regular reports and presentations to communicate performance metrics to VP, Operations and Logistics.

Cost Efficiency:

  • Identify opportunities to reduce operational costs and optimize resource utilization; present solutions to VP, Operations and Logistics.
  • Work with VP, Operations and Logistics to implement cost-saving measures while maintaining quality and efficiency.

Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including procurement, transportation, and customer service, to ensure seamless supply chain operations.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Stay updated with industry trends and emerging technologies to drive continuous improvement.
  • Support VP, Operations and Logistics in adapting distribution center operations to changing customer demands and market dynamics as needed.

We're excited if you have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of distribution center operations, inventory management, and distribution processes.
  • Proficiency in distribution center management systems (WMS) and other relevant software.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and make data-driven decisions.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with diverse teams.
  • Project management skills to execute process improvement initiatives.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and guidelines in distribution center operations.
