Job description

Position Objective: Provide services as an Image Analysis Specialist in support of the overall functions of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyzing PET/CT or other anatomic images to identify organs, tissue, tumors or other specific areas of interest, using imaging software to quantify activity or uptake within experimentally relevant areas in preclinical animal models.

  • Support projects that focus on short (hours to days) and longer term (months to years) tracking of adoptively transferred cells of interest, including chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells, natural killer cells, B cells/plasma cells, hematopoietic progenitor and stem cells, myeloid cells, and other cell types under investigation.

  • Close collaboration with radiologists and other investigators within the Molecular Imaging Branch, Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute, NIH.

  • In addition to image analyses, the work involves cell culture, in vitro assays, flow cytometry, and the safe handling and disposal of radioisotopes in a research lab setting.

  • The work will require to be in proximity with macaques and direct handling of rodent, during imaging experiments.

  • Working as part of teams in a highly collaborative environment both virtually as well as in person on the Bethesda, Maryland main campus of the NIH is required.

  • The Image Analysist Specialist will work under the supervision of Dr. Cynthia Dunbar, NIH Distinguished Investigator and Chief of the Translational Stem Biology Branch within the NHLBI, which focuses on understanding the process of hematopoiesis in humans and in animal models that closely predict biology and disease in humans.

  • The Image Analysist Specialist will also work closely with Dr. Noriko Sato within the Molecular Imaging Branch, Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute, NIH.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Applicant must have a BA/BS/MA or MS in a relevant discipline.

  • Applicants must have prior experience with image analyses and quantitation, preferably working with PET/CT modalities, and be comfortable with the application of sophisticated Image Analysis software.

  • Must be willing to work directly with laboratory animals and with radioisotopes, following completion of training to perform experiments safely.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with non-technical and technical staff

  • Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects

  • Laboratory experience with cell culture and processing, flow cytometry and safe handling and disposal of radioactively labeled materials is desirable.

  • Prior knowledge and experience with working with cells and mammalian systems and anatomy is ideal.
