Overview
The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and in advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.
The Building Systems Group at PNNL is focused on performing research and studying the operation and performance of existing buildings and the integration of new building technologies to improve energy & water efficiency, and indoor environmental quality. The group is made up of over 65 scientist and engineers across 6 primary capability areas that include: Building Operations & Control, Building Performance Assessment, Building Sustainability, Building Human Factors, and Building Technology Research, Evaluation and Deployment.
The individual we are seeking to join our team will provide technical contributions to a fast growing team of energy efficiency engineers, scientists, analysts and other technical professionals developing innovative methods to achieve greater energy efficiency in the Nation's new and existing homes, commercial buildings, and appliances. This individual will provide technical support to PNNL's efforts to promote the development, adoption, and implementation of progressive energy efficiency technologies, best practices, protocols, and codes/standards that are designed for clear and consistent interpretation and implementation. The individual will also provide support to PNNL's on-going test and measurement program for HVAC units in our environmental test chambers and Lab Homes residential buildings research facility. Potential candidates with an interest in residential/commercial buildings energy efficiency, technology evaluation, performance testing, heating and cooling systems, ventilation, indoor air quality, water heating, and building control and automation technologies are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
The individual will work with and provide technical contributions to project teams that conduct research in support of residential/commercial buildings technologies with an emphasis on HVAC and/or Water Heaters. The primary client is the U.S. Department of Energy offices, and secondary clients include other agencies, state government, utilities, regional energy efficiency organizations, and private organizations. This position offers the opportunity for a broad range of "hand-on" involvement in activities including researching and developing building efficiency related experiments and technologies. Identifying and helping develop new and improved tools, technologies, and resources for addressing energy efficiency and water needs in buildings; designing training and workshops, developing case studies, programs raining that support the application and use of energy efficiency technologies and best practices.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • MS/MA -OR-
  • PhD

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering and at least 2 years' experience; or equivalent education/experience related to: energy efficiency, building energy efficiency and related codes and standards; building science; building instrumentation, control and field studies; appliance codes and standards, financial and energy efficiency data gathering, analysis, and presentation; utilities planning/oversight, and extensive knowledge of best practices in energy efficient construction and renovation, architecture, electricity infrastructure technologies and policies.
  • Prefer an individual with test and measurement experience with HVAC units (other buildings related technologies) and operation of environmental test chambers.
  • Strong analysis skills, experience with data acquisition & control systems, energy analysis approaches and software packages, and/or experience with programs that develop and promote technologies and best practices for energy efficiency are desired. The person will have experience in the energy efficiency and or electricity infrastructure industry and will possess a growing reputation working for or with energy efficiency, utilities, architecture/engineering firms, state/local government, regional energy efficiency organizations, research organizations, universities, or others who operate in the residential construction and renovation industries.
  • Looking for an engineer with growing technical expertise in building energy systems and/or energy efficiency science. Individual will have the growing ability to apply advanced energy principles, theories and concepts in the fields of efficiency, building control & automation technology, building science, including building energy use, management, and analysis. Individual will have a strong desire to perform "hands-on" research and testing. Individual should be able to demonstrate training and experience in building science with application to residential and/or commercial buildings.

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment
  • Work may involve visiting construction sites or working in experimental laboratories located at PNNL or its contractors and collaborators.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year.
