Hvac Technician-North Slope

Purpose of Position:

Performs both difficult and skilled technical work to include scheduling maintenance, repairs, replacement, and installation of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, controls and distribution systems.

Educational Requirements:

• High school graduate or GED equivalent
• State Card preferred, not required

Experience and Background:

• Performs all tasks safely and in a timely manner.
• At least five years of work experience and training which demonstrates suitability for and knowledge of what is required in this type of work.
• Ability to prepare estimates and order cost effective materials for maintenance and repair jobs.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment in determining operational conditions.
• Ability to plan lay out and read blue prints
• Establish and maintain effective working relationship with associates and customers.
• Highly organized and efficient time management skills.
• Have a thorough knowledge of emergency procedures, cleaning supplies and chemicals.
• Enjoy working with people; must be friendly, helpful, patient and able to work as part of a resilient team.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Good communication skills, ability to speak, read and write English.
• Ability to adhere to strict policy and procedures per company and OSHA requirements.
• Must be able to work under different client’s safety and permitting programs.

Certificates, Licenses, or other Requirements:

• Valid State ID, Driver’s License or government-issued ID.
• Preferred but not required completion of an accredited HVAC course
• Refrigerant Handling Card (EPA608).
• 5 Years’ Experience working with complex HVAC systems & equipment including chillers, boilers, package units, VAV systems (direct digital, pneumatic and automatic controller systems.
• NSTC-preferred, not required.
• Rotational schedule of 11.50 hours per day for a minimum of 21 - 28 days consecutively or as required.
• Ability to lift & carry 50 pounds on regular basis and perform routine walking, standing and bending. There is a lack of immediate access to critical medical services, as well as urban community services.
• Must pass a pre-hire testing; drug test, breath alcohol test, occupational test, computer-based testing and criminal background check.

Essential Duties or Functions:

• Installs, troubleshoots and repairs heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems including chillers, boilers and heat pumps.
• Troubleshoots malfunctioning heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems to determine the cause of the malfunction.
• Performs scheduled maintenance inspections, and adjusts, cleans and calibrates various systems to assure proper system operations.
• Repairs wiring and electronic components associated with automated building management systems.
• Replaces expansion valves, compressors, motors, coil units and other component parts.
• Cleans refrigerant systems from hermetic burnouts, evacuates, and charges systems.
• Troubleshoots and repairs direct digital and pneumatic control systems
• Checks distribution systems for proper velocity, volume, temperature, pressure, etc.
• Balances air systems.
• Determines cause of and corrects condensation problems.
• Provides technical assistance with the design of HVAC systems including installations and modifications to existing systems.
• Prepare timely and accurate reports describing procedures, actions taken and recommended solutions.
• Inspect contract work as required for the scope of work.
• Determine time and cost estimates for HVAC jobs.

Prepares and submits requests for parts, supplies and equipment; obtains purchase orders and work cost control to insure time billing.

• Responds to emergency service requests.

Knowledge of pertinent rules and regulations, guidelines, safety orders, departmental operating procedures and safety regulations sufficient to ensure that work is performed in compliance with applicable law. Enforces sound safety and housekeeping practices.
Follows safety rules/procedures; avoids known hazards in the work environment.
Reviews safety procedures before beginning each job with known hazards and uses a job safety analysis JSA.
Safety first. Places avoidance of injury or property damage, above all other job requirements.
Follows established safety procedures. May be required to wear respiratory protection in the performance of their duties.
