HUMANITIES FACULTY (FULL-TIME, INTERIM, HISTORY EMPHASIS)

The Idyllwild Arts Academy provides pre-professional training in the arts and a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum to a diverse student body of gifted young artists from all over the world. It is a boarding Arts high school. 

 

The Idyllwild Arts Summer Program provides arts instruction and experiences of the highest caliber to a diverse student population of all ages and abilities.

 

Idyllwild is a small town located at over 5,000 feet on the western slopes of California’s San Jacinto Mountains. Even though it seems far from the hustle and bustle of city life, the town and campus frequently have hosted music festivals, prominent speakers and artists, and community events. Also, it is only two hours by car to Los Angeles and San Diego.

 

OPPORTUNITY:  Full-Time Interim Humanities Faculty (History Emphasis)

LOCATION: Idyllwild, CA 92549

STATUS: Full Time/Exempt

SUPERVISES: None

START DATE: Immediately

SALARY RANGE: $51,000 - $63,000 (annual salary); Full-time employees are also eligible for generous benefits package 

 

 
POSITION OVERVIEW

Idyllwild Arts Academy welcomes experienced instructors to apply to teach core History and Government & Economics courses. This position teaches five sections of History/Social Studies courses including Modern World History; Modern World History (Honors); and Government & Economics (Honors). 

This is a unique opportunity to join a boarding school community that focuses on pre-professional training for artists while at the same time emphasizing the importance of academics and interdisciplinary approaches to arts education. We are seeking an educator who will support the arts, and appreciate the unique environment of Idyllwild. Idyllwild is a small town located at 5,000 feet on the western slopes of California’s San Jacinto Mountains. Even though it seems far from the hustle and bustle of city life, the town and campus frequently host music festivals, prominent speakers and artists, and community events. Also, it is only two hours by car to Los Angeles and San Diego. 

SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE: 

  • Teaches five sections of History/Social Studies courses including Modern World History; Modern World History (Honors); and Government & Economics (Honors). 

  • Uses a wide range of primary and secondary source materials, including work with the U.S. American historical story.

  • Develops units and lessons that help students understand their place in the historical narrative, and which utilize multiple modalities of instruction and assessment.

  • Adheres to the guidelines, goals, and curriculum of the Humanities department.

  • Welcomes the opportunity to develop Social Studies and/or English 12th-grade electives.

  • Participates in and leads social and cultural events, and serves as an enthusiastic supporter of school events.

  • Maintains timely and professional communication with students, families, faculty, Department Chair, and Idyllwild Arts staff.

  • Serves as Advisor of a group of Academy students, and other typical full-time Academy faculty duties (i.e. chaperoning campus events or trips, etc.).

  • Participates in other administrative duties including, but not limited to, attending faculty, committee, or other meetings. 

  • Performs other duties as needed or assigned by Department Chair, Assistant Head of School, Head of School, or IAF President. 

  • Modest campus-owned housing may be available in exchange for dorm parenting, depending on availability of dorm parent positions and campus-owned housing.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in History, English (or related field) required

  • Master’s Degree or beyond is preferred

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Has at least 3-5 years of instructional experience in History, or other related Humanities subjects, at the high school level.

  • Works effectively in teams, with the ability to work independently and generate innovative curriculum within an arts boarding community.

  • Is sensitive to cultural, racial and ethnic, gender, and economic diversity.

  • High level of organizational skills and outstanding professional communication skills.

  • High level of comfort with high school students, and international cultures, including English Language Learners.

  • Has an expertise in skills instruction, including critical thinking and reading, analytical writing, and project-based learning.

  • Understands and is experienced in multicultural and global perspectives.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging as related to teaching Humanities courses.

  • Familiarity with technology as appropriate in the context of learning support.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Has at least three years experience teaching international high school students.

  • Has interest in working and teaching in a community where arts is at the core of the educational experience.

  • Has developed and worked within an interdisciplinary curriculum.

  • Familiarity and experience with effective online instruction. While this is an in-person instruction position, occasions may arise in which we ask faculty to temporarily teach their class online.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Ability and desire to work within the Idyllwild community, Riverside County, or commute a reasonable distance, that does not impede on-time arrival during winter months.

Pass a criminal history background check as required by California Education Code Section 44237, and pass a TB test.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENTS

While performing the duties of this position an incumbent may be required to:

  • Regularly remain sedentary for long periods of time in meetings and while processing information and paperwork both manually and on a computer.

  • Reach with the hands and arms and use of hands to finger, type, and manipulate a computer keyboard and mouse.

  • Additionally, the incumbent must be able to converse in clear English both written and orally, over a telephone and in person, and be able to make public presentations.

  • Occasionally, incumbent may be required to lift up to 25 pounds, traverse uneven terrain and climb stairs while moving about campus, bend and stoop, and show visitors campus facilities.

  • Provide own transportation for local and remote events.

  • Work hours vary and may include days, nights, and weekends.
