The Humane Education Associate works as part of a robust Humane Education department and is responsible for supporting Humane Education operations that strive to provide excellent outreach and education to youth in our community. This role's primary function is to deliver our Humane Education programming including camps, tours, workshops, birthdays, school programs, presentations, youth volunteer programs, and other outreach events.

QualificationsQualifications
- High school graduation or equivalent
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in related field, preferred
- Experience in delivering educational programming and supervising children (K 12)
- Experience in providing programming to culturally and economically diverse groups, preferred
- Experience in facilitating education programs in an informal learning environment (animal shelter, zoo, museum, nature center), preferred
- Familiarity with animal welfare issues
- Experience with animal handling/care, preferred
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and manage time well
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
- Pre-employment background check, drug screening, TB test, and finger-printing clearance required
- A valid CA driver’s license, evidence of insurability and reliable transportation
Responsibilities
- Deliver Humane Education programs (camps, tours, birthday parties, school programs, presentations, youth volunteer programs, etc.)
- Maintain an organized, structured classroom; assist with set up & clean up each day
- Provide a safe, fun and engaging learning environment for participants
- Follow East Bay SPCA policies and procedures when working with participants, staff, volunteers and shelter animals
- Assist with program administrative tasks
- Facilitate animal meets with youth, following proper safety protocol and monitoring for safe interactions
- Respond to electronic and telephone messages in a timely and appropriate manner
- Provide care for onsite education animals, as needed
- Provide basic communications with clients
- Comply with applicable Mandated Reporter requirements per California Penal Code
Working Conditions
- Schedule:
- Friday through Tuesday work schedule
- Must be available to adjust schedule to work special events or cover as needed
- Friday through Tuesday work schedule
- Work is performed in an animal shelter environment at Oakland and Dublin facilities
- Must have reliable transportation
- Must be comfortable handling dogs and cats of all sizes and ages
- Animal contacts and related injuries, including bites and scratches, may occur
- Noise exposure varies and often includes uncontrolled barking and other animal vocalizations
- Animal waste contact, smells and visual exposure are prevalent
- Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. with reasonable accommodation
