We are currently hiring for an Human Resources Specialist in our Buffalo area! The Human Resource Specialist will oversee and administer leave requests and accommodations requiring specialized attention, particularly those arising under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), state and local leave laws, and Workers’ Compensation. As well as is responsible for administering benefits; new hire enrollments, terminations and open enrollments accordingly.
JOB DUTIES:
- Execute all aspects of moving the organization’s personnel to any existing or new benefit plans; including new hire and open enrollment. Responsible for discontinuing benefits for employees that terminate during the month/year
- Educating staff on existing benefits on an ongoing and open enrollment basis. Work with HR leadership and outside Benefits Team to develop and execute Benefit Orientations/Training
- Communicates with employees regarding their needs for leave and/or modified work schedules. Ensures that employees are aware of their responsibilities and of any documentation and notice required to qualify for and to take leave.
- Handles the leave administration process from the employee’s initial notice of the need for leave to the return to work. This includes gathering and completing all required paperwork, determining leave eligibility, designating leave as qualifying, requesting medical certification as needed, and accounting for intermittent and reduced schedule leave use.
- Maintains reasonable communication with employees on leave to facilitate smooth and timely return to work; relays communication between employees and their managers during leave within reason.
- Advises managers and employees on the interaction of leave laws with paid time off, workers compensation, and short-term and long-term disability benefits.
- Oversees the return-to-work process for employees returning from extended leave, or workers compensation.
- Facilitates other leave requests, which may include accommodation requests under the ADA.
- Drafts and/or recommends revisions to company leave policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Maintains complete and accurate records of leave and accommodation requests in accordance with specified legal requirements and documentation of best practices.
- Preserves confidentiality of employee medical documentation and files.
- Works with the HR Team in processing other work flows such as end of employment, records request, reporting and any other items.
- Maintains knowledge of all applicable leave and accommodation laws including the FMLA, ADA, and state and local laws.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
LIGHT WORK: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

Ability to commute/relocate:
- Buffalo, NY: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required)
Experience:
- Human resources: 1 year (Preferred)

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associates degree in Human Resources or related field preferred
- Two years of human resource experience preferred.
- Knowledge of the leave requirements and other legal protections afforded by the FMLA, ADA, and other applicable laws.
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment
- Enjoy working in a high-volume, detailed and structured environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
- Experience working with Benefit Enrollment Platforms
- Some travel is required for this position
