The HSE Specialist is responsible for coordinating, administering, and implementing company-wide occupational health and safety programs. This role acts as the facility’s injury management representative at this facility, with additional responsibilities including training employees in safety best practices, assisting with hazard identification and the development of safe work procedures, identifying, developing and delivering safety training supplements, providing day-to-day guidance and advice.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with safety orientation and observational tours, safety training as needed
- Conduct job site safety inspections, including hazard analysis, safe work procedures, written reports and recommendations.
- Maintain and ensure implementation of HSE programs and training such as, but not limited to Stop Work Authority, Industrial Hygiene Monitoring, Behavior-Based Safety Program, Hazard Communication, Emergency Action Plan, Hearing Conservation, Hot Work, Respiratory Protection, and other programs where applicable.
- Ensure the prompt completion of accident/injury reporting documentation.
- Always required to respond to and provide support for all incidents.
- Maintain Worker's Compensation and Injury Management with Propell.
- Maintain OSHA Logs.
- Provide technical assistance and oversight for HSE programs at facilities.
- Support environmental programs including air, hazardous waste, wastewater, and stormwater management.
- Promote and enforce site HSE programs, ensuring awareness and accountability.
- Support supervisor in the administration of weekly toolbox meetings.
- Provide administrative and record keeping duties including incident report reviews, risk assessments revisions and reviews, accident investigations, near miss reporting, safety observations, etc.
- Conduct monthly inspection of fire extinguishers and emergency equipment (eye wash, air horn, etc.) and ensure they are ready for use.
- Upkeep and maintenance of safety information and resource material on safety bulletin boards.
- Maintain company’s SDS documentation library to ensure they are current for compliance.
- Regularly review safety programs by inspecting or auditing work areas, equipment, processes, and work activities for accuracy and relevance to company’s operations.
- Coordinate inspections, investigations, and occupational safety activities with departments.
- Record keeping of safety documentation records such as incident, inspections (crane, mobile equipment, facility inspections, etc.)
- Perform additional assignments per supervisor’s direction.

Training/ Certification:
- Relevant safety certification training (e.g. HAZCOM, First Aid, etc.) is considered a strong asset.
Education and Experience:
- Post-secondary education in Safety or related field an asset
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of OSHA standards & Workers’ Compensation Legislation.
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
- Direct experience assessing training needs, creating training materials to fulfill those needs, and then delivering the training.
