The Role
Develop and administer Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) programs in a food ingredient manufacturing facility in accordance with all local, state, and federal regulatory requirements and ACH corporate policies, standards, procedures, and objectives. Foster factory leadership team and associate awareness, involvement, and accountability of HSE initiatives. Ensure full integration of HSE activities into everyday business operations. Direct the facility HSE activities to minimize company liability and promote sustainability.
What You'll Do:
  • Identify and leverage HSE best practices to develop, implement, maintain, and continually enhance the ACH HSE continuous improvement pillar and daily management systems to ensure full compliance with OSHA Regulations (29 CFR 1910 - General Industry), EPA Regulations (40 CFR - Protection of the Environment), and all related state (Illinois) and local safety and environmental regulations.
  • Procure and maintain records, data, technical documents, or other necessary information to prepare internal or external reports, respond to OSHA or EPA requests, and verify compliance to all mandatory regulations.
  • Lead EHS planning at the facility, including the setting of goals, prioritizing facility needs, and establishing adequate systems for performance review and improvement.
  • Lead the facility in promoting and implementing a high performance HSE culture.
  • Develop and direct activities that will stimulate and maintain associate interest in improving HSE performance and assist associates with implementing creative approaches to improving safety, minimizing environmental footprint and liability, and implementing HSE initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain site security and workplace violence programs to protect associates and assist the Quality Assurance team in developing and maintaining the FDA Food Defense Measures and Plan (21 CFR 121 - Mitigation Strategies to Protect Food Against Intentional Adulteration) for protecting the integrity of our products from intentional contamination or adulteration.
  • Initiate, lead, and maintain the Factory Safety Team and First Responder Teams. Insure First Responder Teams maintain First Aid certifications.
  • Conduct and document routine EHS audits, reports, investigations, and inspections, provide recommendations, and ensure proper follow-up and resolution of all concerns identified.
  • Utilize trend analysis to develop proactive improvements to reduce work-related injuries and at-risk conditions.
  • Manage the facility incident investigation process to ensure incidents are reported in a timely manner, root causes are identified, and corrective actions are tracked through closure.
  • Coordinate with Human Resources to manage workers' compensation claims and return-to-work activities.
  • Plan, develop, deliver, and coordinate effective EHS training for all factory employees, temporary workers, contractors, and visitors to promote a strong EHS culture and awareness of corporate and governmental EHS regulations and requirements.
  • Manage contracted services for specific safety and environmental activities.
  • Evaluate current and proposed codes, standards, regulations, and guidelines in order to inform the factory leadership team of the impact on current and future programs and activities.
  • Assesses current EHS procedures and practices, advise management team of any risk impacts, and recommend improvements.
  • Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, industry guidelines, and company specifications.
  • Provide technical assistance on environmental, safety, and health matters, and assist leadership team in justifying new machinery, equipment, and processes to reduce the corporation's overall exposure related to environmental, safety, and food defense matters.
  • Work with engineering and maintenance team in the design and installation of new or altered equipment and processes with the goal of eliminating or reducing safety hazards and environmental impacts.
  • Provide recommendations to management in response to environmental clean-up and prevention efforts.
  • Ensures proper EHS equipment and supplies are on-site and monitor adherence to approved EHS procedures.
  • Provide routine (monthly) progress reports for facility management and associates relative to EHS goals, metrics, and improvement activities.
  • Evaluate new materials and material use to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, promote a safe work environment, and protect the environment.
  • Respond to emergency situations or other directives as needed.

What You'll Need:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, and/or Occupational Health & Safety.
  • Four to six years of hands-on HSE experience in a food manufacturing environment.
  • Proficient computer skills (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.).
  • Ability to create and deliver training materials utilizing various types of media.
  • ASP or CSP preferred.
  • Approximately 10% - 15% travel.
  • The employee will occasionally have to lift up to 50 pounds.
