Neurology at UNM Health Science Center is seeking a highly motivated and organized individual for a full-time Health Sciences Research Scientist I to perform research with Dr. Ranjana Poddar. The position is supported by NIH funded RO1 grant to study the effect of hyperhomocysteinemia, a metabolic disorder on the outcome of neurological disorders. Current research in her lab involves an integrated approach at the molecular, cellular and systems level to understand basis of exacerbated brain injury following ischemic stroke under hyperhomocysteinemic conditions. The goal is to translate these findings into novel therapeutic approaches for cerebral ischemia and other age-associated neurological disorders under hyperhomocysteinemic conditions. The selected candidate is expected to perform experiments including, but not limited to cell culture, small animal surgery (rat and mouse models of middle cerebral artery occlusion, implantation of micro-pump etc.), molecular biology, protein chemistry, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, pharmacological intervention in both in vitro and in vivo models, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and behavioral studies. It is essential that candidates can work independently after being instructed in procedures by PIs and senior staff.
Representative publications from the lab include:
J Neurochem. 124: 558-570; 2013.
J Biol Chem. 294: 11154-11165; 2019.
Neurobiol Dis. 127: 287-302; 2019.
Exp Neurol. 336: 113541; 2021.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1) Perform experiments using cell culture and analyze samples using western blotting, ELISA, immunocytochemistry, and live cell imaging, under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator.
2) Learn and perform surgery in rat and mice and process brain samples for western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry.
3) Collect, prepare, and analyze research data; maintain detailed notebook summarizing experiments and recording research data.
4) Assist with ordering and procurement of supplies and equipment, and with general maintenance of laboratory equipment in good working condition.
5) Learn and perform additional job-related duties as assigned.
6) Flexibility to work on different projects is a prerequisite.
