About the role:

Under the general supervision of the Horticulture Curator and direct supervision of the Horticulture Supervisor, this position will be responsible for providing optimum and complete cultural care and maintenance of plants and beds in the assigned zone. Ensures assigned zone is safe and ready for guest experience.

Duties and Responsibilities(include but not limited to):

• Monitor and maintain assigned landscape zone to include, but not limited to proper pruning, watering, fertilization, pest, disease, and weed management.
• Responsible for chemical applications to trees, shrubs, turf, and plants as deemed necessary through record keeping.
• Responsible for monitoring, maintenance, and control of zone irrigation system.
• Responsible for maintaining current species inventory.
• Responsible for routine and general maintenance for assigned equipment.
• Assist in other areas of the department seasonally as necessary.
• Provide recommended treatments to improve plant health.
• This position will oversee seasonal, temporary labor, volunteers and students as assigned by the Horticulture Supervisor.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Horticulture degree helpful: 2 years experience in commercial landscape maintenance.
• Nebraska Pesticide applicators license or the ability to obtain one.
• Previous knowledge and experience in Landscaping, identification and general maintenance of trees, turf, shrubs, perennials and grasses.
• Experience in in the maintenance and operation of irrigation systems and watering equipment.
• Pest, disease and weed identification and treatment methods.
• Basic record keeping.
• Basic computer knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel preferred a plus.

Candidates might be (depending on position) required to pass a pre-employment background check, drug test, negative skin tuberculosis test, and possess a valid drivers license with a good history.

Working Conditions & Physical Efforts:

• This position may require flexible hours and some split shifts to accommodate our park setting providing minimal disruption to our guests. Will sometimes work extended/odd hours including weekends, holidays and some night programs.
• Work is normally performed under various outdoor environments and weather conditions.
• Must be able to walk long distances across the zoo.
• Must be able to stand, sit, kneel, bend, twist, reach above head and climb.
• Will lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds using safe and proper lifting methods.
