Compensation:$50,000-$60,000 - Commensurate with education and experienceCompensation Type:ExemptEmployment Type:Fixed Term (Fixed Term)Scheduled Weekly Hours:40Grade:E07Department:Student AdvisingPosition SummaryThe Holistic Retention Counselor/Social Worker’s main responsibility will be to foster and assist academic retention and success for all STEM students with a focus on Hispanic and low-income students. The position will be responsible for delivering student support, transfer advising and planning services. The position will provide direct and indirect social work services to students experiencing social, emotional and/or behavioral problems that interfere with their school performance and general functioning. The position will work with students to navigate college administrative processes, assess their situations/capabilities/problems, determine appropriate services, and make referrals to college and community resources as needed. The Holistic Retention Counselor/Social Worker will develop and lead groups/workshops to equip students with the skills and resources relevant to their educational, career, personal, and social needs. In this role, this position may provide early crisis intervention services in collaboration with the counseling department. The new Holistic Retention Counselor/Social Worker will devote 100% of their time to case management advising and coordinate support services for STEM students.Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform needs assessments for students, allowing for the development of a plan to refer, connect, and advocate for students with appropriate college and community resources.
  • Maintains and regularly updates a comprehensive list of emergent and non-emergent social service support options and events in the community.
  • Performs assessments on students in or potentially in crisis related to suicidality, homicidally, violence, etc.
  • Manages student referral system for services and collates data to assess success with delivery of services.
  • In partnership with the counseling department, facilitates education, training, and consultation services for faculty and staff on how to manage students of concern, including how and when to make appropriate referrals.
  • Directs the operation of the Eagle Food Pantry, including making determinations on eligibility for use of the service. Serves as an essential member of the Hunger Task Force Committee.
  • Leads and supports standard methodologies for effective case management with students, understanding student mental health issues, and convening resources from multiple departments and constituencies to address complex student issues.
  • Participates in weekly meetings including CARE Team.
  • Participates in the life of the school, including student activities and events.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or related field is required.
  • One year experience working in a higher education setting, non-profit organization, or K -12 school system as a counselor, social worker, or case manager or equivalent experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in Social Work or other related field from an accredited institution.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)
  • Five years experience working in a higher education setting, non-profit organization, or K -12 school system as a counselor, social worker, or case manager or equivalent experience.
  • Preference is given to candidates with prior experience at the community college level.
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals who may be in distress and/or handling difficult interactions; demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity, as well as the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies (staff, students, faculty, parents, administrators) with diplomacy and tact.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with multicultural populations, and an awareness of issues affecting women, minorities, and persons with disabilities; knowledge, experience, and training in handling issues related to gender-based violence; superior leadership and management skills, including interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills; and excellent presentation and training skills.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Current knowledge of the community resources and support systems available to assist students and their families and a strong drive to forge longstanding relationships with relevant social service providers. Desire and ability to work with students at the university level with diverse backgrounds and levels of ability toward accomplishing their educational goals.
  • Working knowledge of the principals, practices, and ethical standards of School Social Work; the relevant state and federal laws, rules and regulations; and applicable policies.
  • Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet many and varied deadlines and communicate effectively with students, parents, school administrators and faculty, including the ability to discuss topics which may be sensitive.
  • Must keep accurate and detailed records.
  • Excellent interpersonal and mediation skills.
  • Strong computer skills in Word, Excel, Adobe, and Zoom.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail, maintain flexibility, manage time effectively and multitask in a fast-paced environment are required.
  • As a member of a high-performing team, being a team player is a must.
  • Ability to interact effectively as a member of a team and work collaboratively with other departments.
  • Excellent judgment with the ability to manage highly sensitive and confidential information.

  • Knowledge of community resources for referrals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals and agencies.
  • Ability to implement psycho-social assessment, intervention techniques and perform crisis assessment and intervention.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate projects and programs to support students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional and productive working relationships with staff at all levels at Northern.
  • Working knowledge of nondiscrimination laws and compliance regulations including Title IX, due process protections as they apply to Student Conduct proceedings, the Clery Act, VAWA and FERPA.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is normally performed in a typical office environment. Limited remote work may be allowed.
