Job description

JOB SUMMARY

  • Under minimal supervision, the Histology Technician processes and prepares tissue specimens for gross and microscopic examination.
  • Responsible for accessioning specimens; preparation of frozen sections; assisting in gross specimen examination; preparation of fixed tissue specimens; cutting, mounting and staining tissue sections for microscopic examination by a pathologist.
  • Must have well-developed skills and be proficient in all procedures in the Histopathology Laboratory.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Associate's degree in Laboratory Sciences or completion of one year in an approved medical technology program.
  • Three years' experience as a Histotechnologist.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION

  • Certificate from appropriate professional agency (ASCP, NCA, HEW or AMT) or certificate eligible, preferred but not required.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong, effective oral, written, and listening communication skills
  • Manual dexterity, eyes and hand coordination
  • Familiarity with computers in order to perform basic data entry
  • Technical ability and interest
  • Ability to work independently

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Maintains accurate, legible, neat, and organized records of specimens received.
2. Prepares frozen section slides using cryostat.
3. Assists the pathologist or his designee in processing the specimens by:
     a. Having the specimens organized according to the gross examiner's preference.
     b. Ensuring the instruments and materials are present and in good working order.
     c. Accurately labels the specimens as they are processed.
     d. Keeps an accurate, legible, and orderly record of specimens processed.
4. Prepares tissues and other specimens for microscopic examination using:
     a. Automated tissue processors
     b. Embedding equipment
     c. Microtomes
     d. Routine and special staining techniques.
5. Stores or disposes of prepared specimens and slides in a net and accurate manner and to retrieve these materials as directed by the supervisor or their designee.
6. Responsible for expediting the processing of specimens without unnecessary delay.
7. Reports to supervisor or pathologist any problem that might adversely affect the work performed.
8. Keeps the area and equipment clean and functional.
9. Performs all other duties as assigned.

  • Exposure to infection from disease-bearing specimens or patients
  • Exposure to risk of bloodborne/airborne disease
  • Subject to cuts from microtome knives
  • Exposure to hazards for electrical/mechanical/power equipment
  • Possible exposure to odorous chemicals and specimens
  • Possible exposure to toxic/flammable/explosive chemicals and gases
  • Subject to injury from moving parts of equipment
  • Moderate noise environment
  • Subject to injury from sharps
  • Subject to many interruptions and stressful situations
  • May require judgement/action which could result in death of patient
  • Must wear protective equipment (gloves, gowns/lab coats, eye protection, face protection)
