Job Description: Histotechnician Department: Physician Practice
Job Summary: Under general supervision, prepares microscopic tissue slides for diagnostic/research purposes; performs tissue stains to assist in diagnosis; handles specimen accessioning; maintains laboratory and equipment.
JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
May perform any and/or all of the following:
1. Prepares microscopic slides on human tissue for diagnostic purposes; includes fixation, dehydration, infiltration, embedding, microtomy, and mounting to include both paraffin processed tissue and frozen sectioning.
2. Performs histochemical and immunohistochemical stains on a variety of tissues to assist in diagnosis.
3. Processes specimen accessioning to include all manual and computerized data entry.
4. Prepares and maintains all necessary reagents, including stains, alcohols, and paraffins according to proper specifications.
5. Maintains laboratory, equipment, and accurate records of quality assurance control; assists with teaching and implementation of new procedures.
6. Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
· Knowledge of programming and operation of general laboratory and automated JHC equipment
· Interpersonal/human relations skills
· Ability to operate a personal computer
· Ability to approach problems/decisions analytically
· Ability to maintain records
· Ability to use microscope, cryostat, tissue processors, and stainers
· Ability/willingness to adhere to the established departmental service standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and experience equivalent to:
Associate’s degree; HT(ASCP) Histotechnican certification preferred, but not required.
