Job description

Position Summary

The Histology Manager oversees and participates in daily operations of the laboratory and is responsible for policies, procedures, and compliance of regulatory agencies. Responsible for the planning and execution of strategic goals within the lab. Coordinates overall performance of Anatomical Pathology services with Medical Director and management including overall services, documentation, supply management, and compliance with applicable CLIA and Accreditation requirements.


Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Oversees and participates in daily operations of the laboratory, including specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, all staining, and gross specimen dictation, and ensures smooth daily operations of the lab.
  • Supervises and directs laboratory services with laboratory Medical Director and Chief Operating Officer to establish priorities and further goals of lab.
  • Coordinates overall performance of Pathology services with Medical Director and management including overall services, documentation, supply management, and compliance with applicable CLIA and Accreditation requirements. Assists with cost analysis and operating budgets.
  • Participates in the planning and execution of the growth of pathology services.
  • Updates and monitors laboratory policies and procedures to ensure full compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Manages relationships with vendors and suppliers, including the negotiation of pricing as needed.
  • Evaluates and projects capital equipment purchases, including service contracts.
  • Develops and maintains productive and professional relationships internally, with pathologist group, and other outside facilities.
  • Ensures training and competency of laboratory personnel.
  • Monitors quality indicators monthly, quarterly, and annually.
  • Monitors and documents process improvements.
  • Responsible for problem resolution.
  • Manages the pickup of hazardous waste.
  • Stays up to date on professional standards.
  • Participates in leadership meetings, trainings, activities, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Education
    • Bachelor of Science Degree in biology, chemistry, or related health science field, or equivalent education and/or training as required per professional society requirements.
  • Licensure/Certification
    • Current certification as a Histotechnologist (HTL) through ASCP, or Histotechnician (HT) through ASCP with training in specimen grossing.
  • Experience
    • Minimum of five years of experience as a Histotechnologist or Histotechnician in a hospital or laboratory setting.
    • Previous leadership experience highly preferred.

    • Knowledge of pathology lab equipment and related technology.
    • Knowledge of regulatory standards to satisfy compliance requirements.
    • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
    • Legal considerations when dealing with employment-related matters.

    • Possesses interpersonal, communication, and listening skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with physicians, coworkers, vendors, and all levels of staff.
    • Problem-solving skills, considering all aspects of issue prior to responding.
    • Proficient computer skills working in an Electronic Medical Record (EMR), practice management software, and Microsoft Word and Outlook, and the Internet.
    • Demonstrates professionalism and respect in all forms of communication and correspondence.
    • Extreme attention to detail while working with specimens.
