Job description

Summary: The Health Information Management Technician compiles, processes, and maintains medical records for Hunter Health patients in a manner consistent with medical, administrative, ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements of the health care system.Our HIM team follows a hybrid schedule working in-office one day a month (Wednesday) and remotely for the rest.
Job Responsibilities:

  • Abides by the Confidentiality and Privacy Act laws and all standards for medical records required by federal or state law, and company policy
  • Maintains, scans, and keeps secure patient records
  • Retrieves medical records daily from various clinic departments
  • Scans and/or uploads patient records into the Electronic Health Record in a timely manner
  • Logs, maintains and tracks billable and nonbillable requests for Release of Information of protected health information
  • Provides Release of Information to requesting person/organization according state requirements and Hunter Health Policy
  • Tracks payment for billable Release of Information and contact billable vendors for unpaid accounts
  • Reports concerns or errors of a patient's medical record immediately to the HIMS Manager.
  • Monitors fax and Medical Records email accounts daily and distributes faxes to the appropriate department in a timely manner
  • Logs, maintains, and tracks patient paper records being stored at Underground Vault and Storage
  • Inactivates patients within the Electronic Health Record for patient population management
  • Provides medical records reports to Hunter Health departments as applicable
  • Merges duplicate patient records
  • Assists in the upkeep of the Health Information Management Department
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
  • High school education or GED required. Medical Record Certification and Training preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Electronic Health Records program preferred.
  • Prior customer service experience preferred
  • Ability to multitask required.

  • Working Conditions: Works in a well-lit, climate-controlled environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually high. Potential exposure to infectious disease is possible.
  • Physical Strength: The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Mathematical Ability: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
