Job description

JOB SUMMARY: Greenville High School is a 9th through 12th grade school located in Montcalm County and is part of the Greenville Public Schools District. The current enrollment at Greenville High School is approximately 1,100 students. The ideal candidate will be a proven communicator, collaborator, and instructional leader.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: other duties may be assigned

As the administrative head of the school, the High School Principal is directly responsible to the Superintendent. They shall conduct the school’s business in a manner consistent with the policies of the Board of Education and keep the Superintendent informed of the school’s activities and issues. The principal shall display skills in the following areas:

  • Leadership
  • Assess the strengths and weaknesses of the school and set improvement goals
  • Establish and maintain an atmosphere and school climate that is orderly and conducive to teaching and learning
  • Develop a school focus through a school improvement plan that is understood and accepted by students, staff, and parents
  • Maintain a school climate that is free of discrimination and negativity
  • Stimulate a spirit of high morale, cooperation, and enthusiasm
  • Prepare plans for staff development under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, and in coordination with the School Improvement Committee
  • Plans and facilitates School Leadership Team meetings
  • Prepare short and long-range goals for discussion with Superintendent
  • Create an atmosphere of service to students, parents, and the community
  • Create opportunities for student, parent, and community input into the school’s operation and development of programs
  • Assist the Superintendent in the implementation of the district’s strategic plan
  • Management
  • Make recommendations to the Superintendent and Board of Education regarding the appointment, promotion, discipline, and dismissal of professional and support staff under their supervision
  • Conduct regularly scheduled staff meetings for the purpose of communication, dialogue, and employee input
  • Conduct evaluations of all staff in accordance with provisions of employee agreements
  • Create staff and student handbooks for a clear understanding of policies, procedures, and expectations
  • Prepare and supervise the preparation of all reports, records, and lists for the necessary operation of the school, including student records, as required by state law and Board policy
  • Publishes regular staff communications
  • Demonstrates understanding of MTSS and implements appropriately
  • Promptly follows up on recommendations, concerns, and complaints from students, staff, parents, and the community
  • Maintain high visibility in classrooms, halls, and grounds
  • Monitor and supervise all curricular and co-curricular events held in the building
  • Curriculum Planning and Development
  • The Principal will provide leadership under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction in the following ways:
  • Function as the educational leader through an assertive instructional role of curriculum assessment, monitoring, and program implementation
  • Coordinate the testing program, analyze the results, share data with staff and parents, and make recommendations for program improvement
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of learning and effective instruction, and teaches such principles to faculty
  • Provide leadership to curriculum writing committees and participates in the district curriculum development process
  • Coordinate the planned sequence of curriculum in harmony with district-wide curricular and program policies
  • Stays abreast of curricular development, educational research, and professional trends
  • Budget and Building Management
  • Prepare the building budget to reflect immediate and long-term needs in cooperation with the Director of Finance
  • Manage the building budget according to district policies
  • Maintains high housekeeping standards for cleanliness, building appearance, light, ventilation, and sanitation in cooperation with the Facilities Department using the work order system
  • Maintains high health and safety standards according to state law and Board policy
  • Community Relations
  • Maintain a focus of service to employees, students, parents, and community
  • Conduct open houses, visitation days, orientation sessions, and general interest meetings with parents and the community
  • Publish student handbooks of policies, procedures, and expectations
  • Coordinate a school parent organization or parent advisory committee
  • Submit articles and information for publication as outlined in the district communication plan
  • Create a positive atmosphere with business, industry, or other community agencies to extend and support the school curriculum
  • Bear ultimate responsibility for the prompt and satisfactory performance of the identified duties

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to understand, interpret, and impact data, including student achievement results
  • Knowledge and experience in implementing best practice instructional strategies
  • Exemplary school management practice
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Team building and collaborative group processing skills
  • Abilities in planning, school schedules, and public relations
  • Knowledge and experience in professional growth models of teacher evaluation
  • Ability to connect with students and parents with varied socioeconomic backgrounds

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in the field of education
  • A minimum of 6 (six) years of secondary teaching experience

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate
  • Valid Michigan school administrator certificate
