HIGH SCHOOL PREVENTION SPECIALIST
Battle Mountain High School
(3 year Grant Funded beginning Aug 2023)

SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION:Prevention Specialists are responsible for identifying the needs and research based interventions to reduce the high-risk behaviors of students, such as substance abuse, suicide risk, and tolerance and acceptance of diversity within the school communities. This professional will provide consultation and professional development training to both school staff and students on preventative health care systems and improving mental health within the school setting.

ESSENTIAL JOB ELEMENTS (Major Areas of Responsibility and Duties):
  • Introduce and expand upon the Evidenced-Based School Programming (EBP), programming and strategies that evaluation research has shown to be effective, for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in the school. Assist with ensuring effective service delivery, as well as review of proposed programs and curriculum. Serve as the school liaison with the community based Prevention Providers group.
  • Provide support to engaging and communicating with parents/guardians surrounding SEL programming- provide an opt out option for parents/guardians should they feel they do not want their student to participate and manage the opt out lists.
  • Support school with training and interpreting Behavior and Emotional Screening System (BESS) data for students and participate in the MTSS team meetings to identify students who are demonstrating at-risk behaviors inside and outside of school to determine if these students and their families need case management.
  • Provide care coordination for identified students to improve their emotional well-being and academic performance, as well as increase their sense of belonging/community connectedness. Facilitate family meetings with community partners to increase student success outcomes.
  • Work with administration in building on Truancy prevention plans and attend court if pertinent.
  • Provide consultation for district personnel regarding behavior planning, mental health supports, and classroom based interventions in an effort to support student learning in a holistic manner, based on data analysis.
  • Bring trauma informed and trauma responsive teaching strategies into the classroom via partnership with organizations that specialize in trauma informed, trauma skilled, and restorative justice that creates a safe and supportive learning environment.
  • Support at risk students by coordinating reduction/alternative to suspension opportunities.
  • Serve as the school's Hope Squad Ambassador for the Hope Squad program.
  • Participate in regular professional learning community meetings, within individual school and school counselor PLC's.
  • Gather and maintain information needed for reporting student based outcomes (increased attendance, improved reports of relationships with staff at school, decreased behavior referrals, engagement in community resources or internal resources, numbers of students and families served). Gather and maintain data for grant reporting.
  • Attend meetings and collaborate with the school wellness team.
  • Collaborate with other District Coordinators and Executive Directors on District initiatives. Support District Wide school culture, staff wellness and student wellness initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's Degree
  • Hold a Colorado Department Education licensure in School Psychology, Social Worker or School Counselor.
  • Recommended but not required;
    • Individual & Group Therapeutic Counseling experience
    • Bilingual English/Spanish
    • Experience in planning and providing Professional Learning for adults
    • Colorado Addiction Counselor Certification
    • Experience in working with At-Risk youth

SPECIFIC SKILLS RECOMMENDED:
  • Knowledge of progress monitoring tools and techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to administer and interpret cognitive and social/emotional diagnostic evaluations
  • Demonstrated ability to provide evaluation results clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Demonstrated communication skills, both written and oral
