Overview
The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and in advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.
Responsibilities
PNNL is seeking High School candidates for assignments within the Bridging Opportunities for Leadership and Training in STEM (BOLTS) program. The AI & Data Analytics and Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Divisions are looking for individuals who have a passion for solving critical national challenges using advanced computational, statistical, and mathematical techniques. The intern will be given an opportunity to be presented with complex problems in national security, cybersecurity, energy, and science; apply cutting-edge research to make our nation safer and stronger; develop complex computer code; develop and participate in cyber competitions; design new visualization; work with big data and optimize solutions for energy. The anticipated start date for summer cohort will be June 18, 2024.
The internship can be in one of the four following technical groups:
  • Applied Statistics & Computational Modeling
  • Cyber Security
  • Data Sciences & Analytics
  • Visual Analytics

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be enrolled at Chiawana High School and are currently of Junior status at the time of application.
  • Applicants must be 16 years of age by start date.
  • Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (from beginning of 9th grade to current standing).
  • Enrolled in PNNL BOLTS program.
  • Demonstated participation of BOLTS program.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Excitement to learn new skills and tools in programs like R, Python, etc.
  • Discrete event simulation (e.g., Arena)
  • Agent based modeling, Java, JavaScript, web design, software testing, C#, C++, SQL, and JSON

HSPD-12 PIV Credential Requirement
In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
Mandatory Requirements
Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a "country of risk" without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle.
