The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and in advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.
Responsibilities
PNNL is seeking High School candidates for assignments within the Bridging Opportunities for Leadership and Training in STEM (BOLTS) program. The AI & Data Analytics and Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Divisions are looking for individuals who have a passion for solving critical national challenges using advanced computational, statistical, and mathematical techniques. The intern will be given an opportunity to be presented with complex problems in national security, cybersecurity, energy, and science; apply cutting-edge research to make our nation safer and stronger; develop complex computer code; develop and participate in cyber competitions; design new visualization; work with big data and optimize solutions for energy. The anticipated start date for summer cohort will be June 18, 2024.
The internship can be in one of the four following technical groups:

HSPD-12 PIV Credential Requirement

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be enrolled at Chiawana High School and are currently of Junior status at the time of application.
- Applicants must be 16 years of age by start date.
- Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (from beginning of 9th grade to current standing).
- Enrolled in PNNL BOLTS program.
- Demonstated participation of BOLTS program.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excitement to learn new skills and tools in programs like R, Python, etc.
- Discrete event simulation (e.g., Arena)
- Agent based modeling, Java, JavaScript, web design, software testing, C#, C++, SQL, and JSON
