The UNL Food Processing Center is a multi-disciplinary resource for the food industry, providing a combination of consulting, educational, technical, and business development services. Our mission is to advance the food industry by applying science, investing in people, and building businesses.
The High Pressure Processing ( HPP ) Services Laboratory conducts process optimization, validation and shelf-life studies for university and industry clients.
As the High Pressure Processing Research Technologist, you will:
  • Be responsible for the daily operations of the High Pressure Processing ( HPP ) and High Pressure homogenization ( HPH ) machines in the pilot plants and the HPP Services Laboratory of The Food Processing Center.
  • Design studies and experiments, perform complex laboratory procedures to test for foodborne pathogens, interpret results, and assist with the preparation of technical reports.
  • Manage the HPP Services Laboratory projects, especially HPH projects.
  • Oversee laboratory activities, safe operating procedures, and compliance with institutional environmental health and safety regulations for a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) laboratory;
  • Monitor, verify, and calibrate laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
  • Train and supervise students in their research and assigned tasks.
  • Interact with industry clients, schedule projects, and interface with other service areas of the FPC .

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in food science, food microbiology, food engineering, or other relevant field plus two years of relevant laboratory work experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of common microbiological techniques (e.g., media preparation, culturing bacteria, and microbial counts).
  • PC-based word processing and spreadsheet software program skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in food science, food microbiology, food engineering, or other relevant field.
  • One year of experience in a food-testing lab.
  • Experience with benchtop food microbiology testing and statistics.
  • Knowledge of experiment design, statistics, and Food Safety Modernization Act ( FSMA ) compliance.
  • Ability to multi-task.
