Description of Work Unit
CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Position Summary
A Heavy Equipment Operator position is available at Fort Stewart, Georgia with Colorado State University (CSU) and the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). The position will help support the Fish and Wildlife Branch at Fort Stewart by providing technical support to facilitate the implementation of the endangered species management program. The position will support mowing midstory vegetation using a mower and shredder, collecting and planting native grass seed, supporting Heavy Equipment operation for habitat restoration activities, and performing repairs and maintenance on equipment.
Fort Stewart is a United States Army installation located near Hinesville, Georgia, approximately 42 miles southwest of Savannah. The 280,000-acre installation hosts a variety of diverse training habitats including forest and woodland ecosystems. The installation supports year-round training from all branches of the armed services in a variety of realistic training scenarios.
Work location is dependent on the needs of the partner/project/role. In some instances, positions may require staff to be fully in-person. In other instances, hybrid or remote arrangements may be possible.
Required Job Qualifications
  • A High School Diploma, General Education Development (GED), or equivalent required.
  • Must have a valid Class A commercial driver's license (CDL), with no manual transmission restrictions, at the time of employment. Must be able to maintain a valid CDL (Type A) throughout the course of employment.
  • Experience with running and maintaining Heavy Equipment.
  • Must be skilled in the operation, maintenance, and repair of bulldozers, dump trucks, excavators, front-end loaders, motor graders, shredders, mowers, agriculture tractors, and tractor-trailer trucks.
  • Ability to maneuver equipment in confined areas.
  • Must have the ability to operate all Heavy Equipment over paved and dirt roads.
  • Possess basic knowledge of terrain and soil composition to determine approach for equipment.
  • Ability to read and navigate using maps, GIS applications, aerial photographs, compasses, and GPS units.
  • Familiar with installation roads, bridges, and access ways.
  • Physically able to work outdoors and perform strenuous labor under all hazardous working conditions (e.g., intense heat, cold, high humidity, noxious plants and animals) including smoke encountered during prescribed burn operations.
  • Be able to lift 50 pounds repeatedly without assistance.
  • Be able to follow directions, work collaboratively with others as part of a team, and maintain safe working standards.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Georgia Level 1A Erosion and Sedimentation Certification required for moving/disturbing soil within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • A minimum of six continuous months of specialized experience in land rehabilitation, land management, and the use of equipment typically associated with land rehabilitation projects.
  • Experience with the use and application of Best Management Practices (BMP) for soil conservation, erosion control, and vegetation management.
  • Experience with habitat restoration in Georgia or nearby area.
  • Experience working on military installations.
  • Experience working in a highly structured organization and knowledge of Army Instructions, directives, guidance, and processes.
  • Pesticide/herbicide application experience and experience in invasive species management.
  • Experience loading and hauling mechanized equipment.

  • Support mowing midstory vegetation using a mower and/or shredder under severe condition.
  • Support collecting and planting native grass seed.
  • Support Heavy Equipment operation for habitat restoration activities.
  • Operate a 5th-wheel type tractor/trailer equipped with air brake connections between truck, tractor, and trailer to move Heavy Equipment from job site to job site or to the storage yard.
  • Load and unload Heavy Equipment at job site or storage yard assuring load distribution, safety requirements, and established procedures are adhered to.
  • Identify job site from GIS maps, aerial photographs, or verbal instructions.
  • Determine route and deliver equipment required.
  • Report daily progress back to federal staff, as required

Duty/Responsibility
  • Under close supervision - perform mechanical/routine maintenance and repair on a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered heavy construction equipment such as mower, shredder, agriculture tractors, excavators, motor-graders, wheeled and crawler type tractors, pick-up trucks, small engines, pumps, and compressors.
  • Diagnose causes of mechanical operating problems and troubleshoot repairs, often having to improvise or develop methods when standard procedures for repairs are not possible while working on various types of heavy mobile equipment.
  • Manufacture or fabricate in house solutions to mechanical problems and issues thereby decreasing repair costs and downtime.
  • Use hand and power tools associated with Heavy Equipment and heavy truck maintenance, and repairs such as air actuated equipment, hydraulic jacks/lifts, welders, grease guns, wrenches, and other tools common to equipment maintenance. Perform and document comprehensive pre-trip inspections on Heavy Equipment, dump trucks, pick-up trucks and tractors/trailers including but not limited to formal operating systems and airbrake checks.
  • Read and follow manufacturer's instructions and safety manuals for operation of Heavy Equipment and power tools.
  • Use proper techniques to lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Follow verbal and/or written instructions from supervisor to complete both minor/major repairs in accordance with approved work orders or assignment objectives.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with supervisor and other Fish and Wildlife personnel.
  • Adapt work plans to changing conditions; i.e., weather, crew strength, unexpected problems with equipment, tools, projects or other unforeseen circumstances.
  • Use computers, spreadsheets, databases, and email programs for documenting work completion or communication.
