Official Title: Heating/Cooling Plant Operator Ior II (3 positions) Business Title: Heating/Cooling Plant Operator Ior II Employment Class: University Staff  FTE: 1.0 Compensation: $22.09-$31.59 and commensurate with experience FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Terms of Employment: Continuous Position Summary:

Monitors, operates, adjusts, maintains, and repairs a variety of technical equipment for the campus Heating and Cooling plants to supply the campus with critical services.

Must pass a pre-work screen to ensure the ability to perform essential physical functions of the position. This position is part of the 24/7 plant coverage and may be assigned to various shifts, including a rotating schedule that includes day, nights, afternoons, and most weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities
  • Ensures safe and efficient operation of the plant and its associated equipment
  • Makes regular inspections of plant equipment and prepares equipment malfunction reports
  • Cleans and maintains work areas and equipment
  • Starts, stops, and adjusts equipment settings to maintain operational requirements
  • Maintains forms, logs, or reports
  • Analyzes data and communicates recommendations on equipment and systems operations, both verbally and in written reports
  • Adheres to safety protocols and procedures
  • Complies with environmental protection protocols and procedures
  • May work without direct supervision on shift operations
  • Assists with preventative and corrective maintenance as needed
  • Assists in the training and oversight of new employees in these and other safe and efficient plant operational procedures
Qualifications   Required:

Required for Heating Plant Operator I:

High School Diploma or equivalent.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Willingness and adaptability to work under unpleasant conditions such as extreme noise, dusty or dirty areas, heat, cold, in wet areas and confined spaces is required.                                                                                                 

Physical ability to walk, stand, sit, lift, and climb ladders.                                                                                         

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, with or without accommodation.                                                         

Strong mechanical background. Experience in the operation of various power tools, hand tools, and testing equipment in the mechanical maintenance field.

Required for Heating Plant Operator II:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Willingness and adaptability to work under unpleasant conditions such as extreme noise, dusty or dirty areas, extreme heat and cold, in wet areas and confined spaces is required.

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, with our without accommodation.

Experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of central heating and power plant equipment, including a high degree of mechanical aptitude, such as skill in making repairs and adjustments on all power plant equipment.

Experience in the operation of various power tools, hand tools, and testing equipment used in the mechanical and electrical maintenance field.

Experience in the operation of computer steam flow meters, feed water heaters, feed water pumps, condensate pumps and forced draft fans, of generating equipment and of water testing and water softening.

Experience with the procedures for lockout-tag out, of the safe operation and maintenance of gas and oil fired steam boilers, of steam flow meters, water meters, pressure gauges, temperature gauges, automatic boiler controls, and their related equipment and the operation and use of safety devices are required, as well as ability to learn and properly apply methods and techniques for the correct and safe performance of fairly complex physical and mechanical tasks and materials handling operations.

ASOPE (American Society of Power Engineers) Power Plant Operating Engineer 3rd Class or NIUPE (National Institute for the Uniform Licensing of Power Engineers) PPOE 3rd Class or FOE (Facilities Operating Engineer).
