Job Description:

As a Heat Treat Engineer , you will have the opportunity to maintain and develop the large engine crankshaft and connecting rod, HEAT TREAT operations in Lafayette.  This position will own the HEAT TREAT processes, capital planning, teaching basic HEAT TREAT concepts to the technicians and support staff, as well as monitoring and troubleshooting the HEAT TREAT equipment.  This position will also coordinate the metallurgical testing to ensure conformance of the products to our requirements.  You will be expected to have close coordination with line supervisors and maintenance team so that HEAT TREAT is not a bottleneck to machine line flows. 

You will also be responsible for maintaining and developing the shot peen processes for the crankshafts, connecting rods, and cylinder heads manufactured at the Lafayette.  Process control and shot audits are the main job functions, but also included is the development of shot or needle peening rework processes as a containment for quality issues.  Capital projects related to shot peen will also be your responsibility. 

Metallurgical engine component responsibility may fall to this position as well to perform failure analysis of returned field iron.  You will partner with and provide technical guidance to facility partners, product groups, global purchasing representatives, and suppliers, as well as provide HEAT TREAT and metallurgical collaboration with process partners, all while broadening your professional network.
 

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

• Monitor HEAT TREAT process and trouble shoot equipment if needed
• Maintain HEAT TREAT process documentation
• Initiate the HEAT TREAT lab audit requests and monitor metallurgical results
• Run process improvement projects as well as capital projects
• Teach HEAT TREAT principles to technicians – Train and certify technicians for furnace operation
• Initiate the shop peen lab audit requests and monitor metallurgical conformance
• Disposition HEAT TREAT and shot peen labs reports
• Participate as the subject matter expert in HEAT TREAT and shop peen value stream meetings
• Metallurgical responsibility of Engine component(s) – Metallurgical Quality conformance ownership and Failure Analysis of returned field iron

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science and 2 years experience OR 6 years of metallurgical / HEAT TREAT / thermal process experience
• Good interpersonal skill to develop a cooperative working relationship with technicians and engineers who work in the lab as well as on the production lines
• Ability to manage multiple projects, good record keeping and prioritization skills
• Great attitude and a sense of urgency for completing tasks
• Strong analytical skills, diagnostic skills and exhibiting good judgement
• Emphasis on initiative and self-starting tasks; willing to learn
• Good customer interface skills
• Good technical writing and communication skills
• Good computer skills
   

Top Candidates will also have:

• Prior HEAT TREAT / HEAT TREAT ENGINEERing / thermal process / metallurgical lab experience
• Knowledge of microstructures
• Knowledge of Caterpillar HEAT TREAT specs and processes
• Capital project experience
• Product audit experience
• Non Destructive Testing experience
• Engine related experience
• Self Driven willingness to learn
