The Adult Education and Workforce Development Division of Catholic Charities of Boston offers comprehensive, high-quality educational services to advance and accelerate the academic achievement of adult immigrant learners who face significant barriers in their search of viable career pathways and self-sufficiency. The Adult Education Centers offer multiple levels of ESOL instruction from beginning to advanced levels of language proficiency, the Healthcare Bridge ESOL Program, ESOL for Human Services, college and career readiness programming, Nursing Assistant and Home Health Aide Training Programs, IT Training, flexible schedules, and distance learning options.

The Healthcare Bridge ESOL Teacher will help design and implement a contextualized curriculum on the Healthcare Bridge ESOL class. The teacher will be responsible for planning lessons and activities, adopting a creative teaching approach and encouraging and motivating students to learn; whether in person, hybrid, or online. The teacher will prepare course materials and design innovative lessons plans that cover all aspects of the English language. The Teacher will provide scaffolded, explicit instruction, practice, and assessment in reading, writing, speaking, listening, digital literacy, and basic math to help students achieve college, career, and personal goals. The teacher will keep track of student progress and customize individualized plans for students depending on their personal needs. The Teacher is responsible for creating a positive, inclusive, and healthy class environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conducting activities and lessons based on ESOL teaching methodologies.

• Encouraging and engaging students to speak in English.

• Motivating students and using humor to induce a pleasant learning environment.

• Maximizing students’ talk time through oral tests and presentations.

• Displaying excellent classroom management.

• Keeping accurate records of student performance.

• Communicating with the Department Director or appointee as needed.

• Maintaining standardized guidelines.

• Comply with funder required policies and regulations.

• Work as a team with other teachers and staff to develop materials, lessons, and share best practices.

• Engage in ongoing professional development to continually improve and innovate services.

• Maintain professional boundaries.

• Work is performed in a classroom environment with computers and other office equipment. Standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods may be required including frequent speaking and directing students.

• Attendance at internal and external meetings and training courses as required.

• Local travel as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

• 3 years of experience teaching ESOL. Knowledge of including math into ESOL class

• Curriculum development experience.

• Knowledge of methods and materials used in ESOL instruction.

• Sensitivity to the needs of the adult learner population.

• A commitment to racial equity and a desire to understand and interrupt systemic racism and other forms of oppression.

• Experience teaching adults in a community-based setting.

• Experience with remote instruction, digital literacy, and distance learning.

• A passion for collaboration, problem-solving, and learning new ways and approaches.

• BEST Plus and/or TABE CLAS-E certification preferred.

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, Teams and other technical platforms.

• Applicants must have the ability to work and interact effectively with individuals and groups with a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies to address the needs of the culturally diverse demographics that we serve.
