The Health Unit Coordinator/ Medical Assistantwill be responsible for performing all functions necessary to maintain the efficient workflow to aid in care for the Inpatient Department. The HUC/ MA will perform
clerical and clinical duties as assigned with direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. The
HUC/ MA will only perform duties within the scope of practice.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Greet patients and visitors as they arrive in a friendly, courteous, and professional
- manner.
- Ensure all admissions have appropriate admission orders when welcoming them to the
- floor (OBS/ IP/ Tele).
- Demonstrate and maintain a working knowledge of customer service principles and departmental expectations regarding customer service.
- Routinely check and respond to work e-mails.
- Check census to ensure appropriate forms are filed to meet regulatory body standards (red/ blue forms, MOON forms) and ensure they are filed with the front desk.
- Maintain patient charts for the IP department, including creating new files, ensuring patient labels are in charts, scanning files into the computer system per policy specifications, and checking daily census to ensure appropriate patients are in the correct charting organizer.
- Responsible for photocopying records and documents into the EHR for billing purposes.
- Perform clerical duties, including but not limited to: initiating transfers for ER/ IP when asked, fielding phone calls and passing to the appropriate personnel, inputting scanned images of strips/ EKGs per policy, readying transfer packets per policy/ protocol, phone in prescription orders per providers orders, and placing verbal orders as needed by the hospitalist.
- Responsible for answering, screening, and directing incoming phone calls.
- Perform patient status changes as the clinical staff directs.
- Perform Admission Notifications on all patients admitted to Inpatient and Observation
- Present and obtain necessary admission paperwork.
- Help maintain daily patient census log for the inpatient department.
- Maintain transfer, AMA, and LWOT log for case management review.
- Maintain and compile reports and informational packets for distribution.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Round with the hospitalist and registered nurse, ensuring to note verbal orders to aid in clinical team rounding. Use 2 patient identifiers and readback with hospitalists to ensure accuracy of verbal orders.
- Call in prescriptions to the local pharmacies per hospitalist orders, following AZ state law.
- Aid in the following clinical aspects if delegated by an RN when downtime allows:
- Escort patients to bathroom safely.
- Perform Vital Sign checks per delegation or policy.
- Aid in rounds with MD and RN.
- Assist RNs with procedures within your scope.
- Set up rooms for admission.
- Restock supplies as needed.
- Perform Venipuncture if delegated by RN.
- Administer immunizations to staff when needed (Flu, Tdap booster, FIT test, etc).
- Collect and prepare lab specimens.
- Aid in wound care/ dressing changes.
- Notify RNs of critical lab results phoned in.
- Notify RNs of important telemetry needs from hicuity.
- Perform ECGs when indicated.
- Other duties as assigned within specific scope of practice.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- Must be a certified* Medical Assistant through AAMA, AMT or CMA
- 1-3 years in a healthcare setting preferred.
- 1-3 years of clerical experience preferred.
- Previous customer service experience.
- Must be able to effectively communicate with patients both in- person and over the telephone.
- Must understand basic medical terminology.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions.
- Ability to effectively present information to patients, families and team members
- Ability to perform basic math when necessary.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to problem solve with multiple variables in situations.
- Basic computer skills/ charting system knowledge.
- Basic medical knowledge.
- Certified MA through AAMA, AMT, or CMA
- BLS required, ACLS preferred.
Shift Schedule:
- 12 hour shifts
- 7AM - 7PM
- May be required to work on holidays
