USC's School for Early Childhood Education (SECE) is dedicated to providing comprehensive, high-quality early childhood education services to children and their families in the South Los Angeles area. Founded in 1970 as a teaching school for future early childhood professionals, the USC School for Early Childhood Education (USC SECE) seeks to promote school readiness, health/nutrition, mental wellness, and family engagement. Today, our licensed Head Start and Early Head Start centers serve more than 500 infants and preschool children and their parents each year. We are seeking enthusiastic, creative, dynamic, and team-oriented individuals who enjoy working with children while fostering a supportive learning environment.
Job Overview:
The position of the Health Coordinator is responsible for the overall monitoring coordination and planning of the health services program designed specifically for children consistent with Early Head Start and Head Start and State Preschool program in alignment with regulations and other pertinent Federal, State Preschool, and California Community Care Licensing, and Grantee guidelines. This position works closely with the Health/Nutrition Services Manager, Registered Nurse, Mental & Disability Health professionals, and other program staff in the supervision, planning, monitoring, and implementation of the comprehensive health/nutrition services for Early Head Start (EHS) and Head Start (HS) & State Preschool programs, including prenatal services for pregnant mothers. This position is responsible for the monitoring, consultation, training, policy and procedure development, and daily oversight of State Preschool Health/Nutrition Services and Health/Nutrition Education for both families and staff.
The Health Coordinator ensures each child receives preventive health care, including dental exams, physical examinations, screenings, and immunizations. Monitors the implementation of state and federal health, nutrition, and safety requirements described in the Head Start Program Performance Standards, Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), State Childcare Licensing Regulations, and local grant goals and objectives. This position assists in managing the Head Start & State Preschool program as a whole with specific responsibilities in coordinating the mental health & disability, health, dental, and nutritional needs of children as well as outside food services. This position also provides student, parent, and staff education in health, safety, and nutrition practices, as well as developing and maintaining collaborations with community agencies and health/nutrition services providers for enrolled Head Start and state preschool families and children.
Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Plan, coordinate, and administer supervision of the health and nutrition services area.
  • Develop a Head Start Coordinated Services team approach to the delivery of health services to EHS and HS children and pregnant mothers.
  • Assists in the development of the Health Services to plan; prepare written plans, and written reports. Facilitates the organization of the Health Service Advisory Committee and utilizes the committee in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the health and nutrition component.
  • Facilitates, leads and coordinates the Health Services Advisory Committee (HSAC) Meetings.
  • Promotes, in conjunction with other SECE staff, active parent involvement in the total program; for example, parents as members of the Health Advisory.
  • Provide direct communication to SECE Executive Director at management meetings with updates/reports as requested.
  • Prepares, maintains, reviews and submits accurate reports as required, such as monthly MIS Reports, annual State Immunization Report and annual PIR (Program Information Report.)
  • Ensures compliance with universal precautions in the classroom and during home visits and when administering first aid for EHS program.
  • Participate in the review of health and nutrition forms for all new enrollments to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Work in conjunction with the Family Services and Home Based Educator Teams to coordinate services for pregnant women, schedule individual consultations and find community services beneficial to pregnant mothers as well as children from birth to three years of age.
  • Has frequent communication with Registered Nurse, MH professionals, Home Base Educators, Family advocates, and Family Services Coordinators, to collaborate in collecting required documents from parents.
  • Assist and monitor any health concerns, such as medical diagnosis, special diets, or allergies.
  • Follow up with pregnant mothers and complete postpartum questionnaire in a timely manner.
  • Interpret the complete health/nutrition needs of Early Head Start, Head Start, and State Preschool programs children and their families.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing, public health, or other health-related field.
  • Three (3) years of recent experience working with high-need parents/caregivers with young children (birth to five), including children with disabilities. Experience includes helping parents/caregivers, who have experienced trauma, access mental health services and working with parents and staff to promote children's social-emotional wellbeing and development.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Registered Nurse
  • Early Head Start/ Head Start experience working with infants and toddlers preferred.
  • Bilingual: English/Spanish.

Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards and Community Care Licensing Regulations including Title 5 & Title 22.
  • Knowledge of Windows environment and applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in the English language.
  • Knowledge of adult learning strategies, early childhood development and developmentally appropriate strategies to support social-emotional development and wellbeing for children birth to five.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with children, parents, staff, and other professionals.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of low-income families and multicultural beliefs and practices. Ability to exercise sound judgment and initiative.
  • Ability to provide leadership and stability to field staff for program continuity.
  • Ability to lead adult groups; provide training and technical assistance to teaching staff and parents.
  • Ability to monitor, analyze and evaluate program systems and procedures, making and coordinating appropriate changes.
  • Skill in collecting and analyzing data, preparing reports, and maintaining records. Ability to write clearly, concisely, and descriptively.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able climb stairs, reach, bend, lift 20-30 pounds, crawl, kneel, stoop, twist, grasp with hands and fingers materials, use arms and legs, able to walk, climb ladders if applicable.

The hourly rate range for this position is $ 30.27 - 38.88 per hour.
