Description

HEAD START TEACHER'S ASSISTANT

Head Startis a federally-funded program that provides preschool education, ensuring that both children andparents are prepared for kindergarten and a life filled with learning. Head Start children also receive numerous health services ensuring good physical, dental, nutritionaland mental health. Head Start is provided to income-eligible families at no cost and services pregnant moms, children with special needs, infants, toddlers and children up to age five.

As a Head Start Teacher's Assistant you will:

  • Provide developmental services with quality and confidentiality for Head Start children and families.

  • Assists the Teacher with planning and implementing daily developmental learning models for pre-school age children, incorporating differences in cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, emotional and physical abilities, individual styles and pace of learning.

  • Maintain a physical environment that promotes optimal growth and development and positive social interaction; enjoy meals with children to promote pro-social behavior.

  • Monitor and supervise children at all times.

  • Demonstrate respect for families' values, strengths, and cultures by welcoming their contributions and participation, encouraging children to talk about their families, and designing learning experiences accordingly; incorporate information about children obtained through home visits, parent-teacher conferences, and other parent-staff interactions into daily routines and interactions with children.

  • Monitor and assist in the documentation of children's progress per the goals developed by self and other staff and specialists by observing and documenting children's play, conversations, routines/schedules, health checks and work samples, and through conversations with families.

  • Assist the Teacher in implementing developmentally appropriate reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social programs that enhance children's knowledge, language and literacy development; and furthers children's listening, vocabulary, and attention span by using prompts for discussion and follow-up activities.

  • Participate in transition process to or from Early Head Start/Head Start, home, and/or other early education and care settings by engaging families, others in the program, and members of the community in planning and implementing strategies that ensure successful transitions, including the transfer of child records.

  • Participate in monthly parent meetings and special events.

  • Assist the Teacher in coordinating with Family Service Workers, ADA, and child abuse program requirements; schedule and document parent-teacher conferences and home visits.

  • Assist Teacher with daily observations and health checks.

  • Acts as a lead in the absence of the teacher.

  • Assist Teacher with recruiting and registering children as required by Head Start Performance Standards.

  • Actively participate in staff meetings, training sessions, conferences, workshops and other career development and professional activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field, preferred

  • Demonstrated knowledge of pre-school teaching activity and diverse cultures

  • Two (2) years of experience working with children in a classroom setting

  • Two (2) years of customer service experience

  • Proficient computer experience in Microsoft Office applications.

  • Experience working with diverse populations, including low to moderate-income families

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize duties

  • Ability to work with and teach infants and toddlers

  • Ability to analyze and interpret data and to handle problem resolution

  • Willingness to accommodate planned and unplanned travel to and from Head Start Center and other C-HCCAA or meeting/conference locations, including overnight and/or out of town travel

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Includes both a typical classroom environment, with minimal exposure to excessive noise or adverse environmental issues, and occasional local travel, including exposure to heat, cold, inclement weather conditions, and occasional environmental hazards.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Use hands to manipulate, handle, feel, and control items or equipment

  • Walk, bend, kneel, and reach;

  • Lift a 20-60 lb. child, using all safety precautions;

  • Stand, sit, and play with infants and toddlers for long periods of time;

  • Conduct both outdoor and indoor activities, in both warm and cold temperatures;

  • Talk, hear, and communicate with parents

  • See and be able to read, write, and interpret written documents.
