TITLE: Teacher I (BS) PROGRAM: Head Start
CLASS: Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Center Manager/Education Coordinator
JOB SUMMARY: The Teacher is directly responsible for the planning, development and implementation of
daily early childhood development learning experiences and activities and for the day-to-day management of
an assigned classroom, including the supervision of assigned Teacher Assistant and/or classroom
Volunteer(s).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Following an approved curriculum approach and daily schedule, develop and implement daily lesson
plans.
2. Set up and organize classroom in a neat and orderly manner. Establish a total climate conducive for
learning.
3. Observe, assess and record the behavior of all children assigned to classroom.
4. Develop and maintain complete and concise records for each child.
5. Within the authority given and in conjunction with the Education and Disabilities Coordinators, develop
and implement an Individual Education Program (IEP) for each child with an identified and confirmed
(professional diagnosis) disability.
6. Complete daily attendance records.
7. Inventory, request and store adequate and appropriate classroom materials and supplies.
8. Make 3 required home visits to the homes of parents or guardians of children assigned to classroom, plus
more if needed.
9. Maintain confidentiality at all times.
10. Supervise and coordinate the activities of the Teacher Assistant and classroom Volunteers.
11. Encourage parent participation in the classroom in special activities, learning experiences and
socialization.
12. Encourage and aid parents in preparation for job training.
13. Arrange field trips for children.
14. Assist with yearly program evaluation.
15. Visit and observe other classrooms (Head Start, Pre-K).
16. Be available, when needed, to meet the needs of the children and families (i.e. emergency situations or
family crisis).
17. Notify parent/guardian in the event of accidents involving students (minor or major).
18. Work with Education Specialist to ensure classroom is organized so as to assure
19. environment is proper for a small child.
20. Assure Teacher Assistant is familiar with class paperwork, forms, etc.
21. Assist in maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment for all children including
22. special needs children.
23. Exercise discretion and sound judgment in the performance of assigned duties.
24. Responsible for keeping accurate in-kind records for classroom.
25. Assist with recruitment and enrollment.
26. Assist with bus duty when necessary.
27. Responsible in evaluating the Teacher Assistant assigned to her classroom.
28. Other duties as required and directed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor's degree (BS) in Early Childhood Education or relative degree with preschool certification.
2. Two years experience in working with young children in a group setting.
3. Must be cooperative and display a positive attitude toward working as a team with other staff members.
4. Must have empathy for children and low-income families.
5. Must understand and respect confidential information regarding children, families and the program.
6. Must exercise discretion and sound judgment in the performance of assigned duties.
7. Must have current driver's license and have access to use of automobile with current insurance.
8. Exhibit willingness to attend all pertinent meetings and training and travel to all work locations.
9. Must possess a valid First Aid and CPR certificate.
The above qualifications express the minimum standards of education and experience of an applicant for this
position. Other combinations of education and experience, when evaluated, may qualify an applicant for
consideration.
