QUALIFICATIONS:
A) ValidConnecticut Certificate #185 Coaching Permit
B) Valid Connecticut Certificate #186 Temporary Coaching Permit
C) Experience as the Board and Administration may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Varsity Coaches report to the Athletic Director.
Assistant Coaches report to Varsity Coaches.
JOB GOAL:
The coach is responsible for the welfare and conduct of the members of his/her squad from the time they report for practice or game until they leave the school following the practice or game. In performing his/her duties, he/she is to exemplify the highest ideals of good sportsmanship and should offer respect and empathy to each athlete as a separate individual. The coach is to expect and enforce guidelines that exemplify the highest behaviors in student athletes.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Demonstrates knowledge of the game coached, teaches game strategies and the techniques to improve team and individual performance, and represents the school in a manner that makes the community proud.
2. Recruits, teaches, and directs the activities of all assistant coaches associated with the program. Takes seriously the responsibility to improve not just his/her team, but the entire school athletic program.
3. Evaluates, in a fair and consistent manner, the coaches and athletes associated with the sport and is able to coach for improved performance.
4. At minimum, all head coaches are responsible to make an appearance at the middle school to meet with the eighth graders annually, provide to them an overview of the program, and watch at least 2 BMS athletic contests (if appropriate). Additionally, each head coach should maintain, through the Athletic Director, on-going communication with the coaches involved with recreationalleagues.
5. Works with the Athletic Director to have appropriate and timely interactions with parent booster organizations.
6. Works with the Athletic Director and school administration to monitor the academic grades and behavior of all student athletes associated with the sport and places student-athletes into tutoring as required by the administration.
7. Plans and schedules a regular program of practice in season. Plans and provides oversight of an off-season conditioning program that promotes the physical development of the student athletes on the team. Promotes off-season attendance as individuals or as teams at events such as skills camps for student-athletes.
8. Ensures the safe conditions of the practice and game areas as well as safe and secure behaviors in the locker room. Secures lock rooms, offices, and storage rooms during and following all practices and games.
9. Explains and enforces eligibility rules to all squad members at the beginning of the season. Provides the Athletic Director with a complete list of squad members for eligibility purposes, and keeps this list updated as additions to the squad are made.
10. Maintains necessary attendance forms and sees to it that all athletes under his/her direction have handed in a completed athletic participation form. No one is to practice who has not completed this form.
11. Issues equipment and uniforms in an organized manner and accounts for their return at the end of the season.
12. In case of injury, gives the necessary first aid and insures that the student reports to the school nurse to fill out an accident report.
13. Supplies Athletic Director with information needed to scheduling scrimmages.
14. Is responsible for the appropriate awarding of athletic letters.
15. Reports all home contests to the Bethel Home News and Danbury News-Times newspapers. Also, if appropriate report to WINE/WLAD.
16. Submits to the Athletic Director at the end of the season:
a. Inventory list of equipment and uniforms
b. Budget requests for the following year
c. Win-loss record for season
d. List of award recipients.
17. Other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director.
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Appointed annually for the season of the sport. This is a stipend position.
EVALUATION:
The Varsity Coach will be evaluated on an annual basis by the Director of Athletics with the approval of the Principal. Assistant coaches will be evaluated by Varsity Coaches.
