About the Role
The Head of Securities Strategy will evolve, update, and drive Swift's vision related to securities, driving market perspective and input on securities markets in the areas of post-trade and asset servicing. Define the path, prioritization, and uphold the strategy of Swift as it relates to securities, and position the vision for Swift both internally and externally. Lead a team driving market engagement and understanding. Work directly with Swift's executives in the following ways: Quarterly meetings with Securities Committee of the Board every quarter (board directors from 5-6 major banks); As-needed meetings with Chief Innovation Officer regarding specific projects; Quarterly meetings of the Strategy-Product steering committee (with Chief Strategy Officer and Chief Product Officer); Regular touch points with the Swift executive committee about the Securities Strategy; Securities Leaders Group (senior representatives from the Top 12 investment banks globally); Prepares and briefs the Swift CEO for his engagement with the securities community; Chairs external working groups or forums where Swift is a member or representative.
The eight major areas of responsibility are as follows:
[1] Create, evolve, drive, and continually updates the vision and strategy in line with the aspirations of Swift
and its communities. Maintain a balanced focus on the short, medium, and long term (20%): engage with major banks, financial institutions, custodians, market infrastructures, broker dealers, asset managers, and banks. Engage with the business development regional heads, go-to-market leadership team, and Chief Product Officer to understand how client needs are being met. Assess the value that clients are deriving from current company products and services. Review and make decisions to adapt the company's vision, client engagement approach, and product high-level requirements. Monitor and review the deliverables of the team that will be reporting to him, including Securities Strategy documents presented to clients. Assign and
oversee team's work regarding events and communications, governance, regulation, technology,, as well as market segment (such as brokers, asset managers managers, market infrastructures, custodians). Present executive briefings, as well as to the board of the executive committee at Swift.
[2] Analyze the marketplace to develop a forward-looking understanding of the market, and resultant opportunities and threats, old and new. Bringing an outside-in view to support plans to sustain and grow Swift's scale and reach (15%): Receive market information through a variety of sources: direct contact with senior representatives in the securities industry; ad hoc or periodic reports from the Swift market intelligence team, Swift's business development teams, and team deliverables (Securities Strategy documents, segment analysis, business cases, reports on client engagement calls, and client workshops). Review these reports that have e to do with trends, growth rates, technology changes, and alternative offers, as well as what competitive offerings are being positioned in the market. Analyze the same and make decisions regarding projecting the evolutions in Swift's business and analyze what is required to sustain and grow the business.
[3] Turn the vision into market driven long term strategic plans, aligning the company behind them, and monitoring the ongoing alignment of company activities to the execution of the strategy. Make sure we are doing what we should do (15%): Prepare Securities Strategy narrative to present how Swift's actions will result in improvements to the market and to the businesses of Swift's customers. Write thought leadership articles, storylines for business development, and a board papers. Integrate narrative when participating in industry panels, working groups, or forums. Engage with clients and market to assess development of the vision and strategy, through meetings with managing directors (heads of operations, product, or strategy at some of the biggest investment banks and market infrastructures globally) or C-level representatives of fintech and partnership companies. Engage directly in conversations with clients (through bilateral discussions with senior representatives of Swift customers organized by our business development team, in working groups, associations, Swift national member groups, the Swift board of directors or different leader groups). Work with internal teams in business development and product to assess the understanding and buy-in on the strategy and vision. Meet with team members so that they can present their findings on the market and segment for which they are responsible. Serve on steering committees.
[4] Socialize the direction across the company and industry. Engage with the industry to continually position and evolve (15%): Meet with and present company Securities Strategy to various Swift teams: strategy management, product, go-to-market team, business development, standards, finance, and public affairs. Participate in external industry events, associations, working groups, forums, and bilateral meetings to explain Swift Securities Strategy. Serve as Swift's representative at major industry events and associations, including SIFMA, ISSA, ISTIC, AFME, ICMA, etc. Serve as a speaker and panelist at most of the securities industries events, including Network Forum, Optic, InvestOps, SIFMA operations forum, Sibos. Represent Swift at meetings with securities firms in each region. Monitor engagement time with internal stakeholders (product tribes, standards, finance, and public affairs), and external stakeholders (bilateral meetings, working groups, associations, and conferences). Monitor team members' participation in working groups, internal projects, and other events to assure good distribution of time and effort. Consolidate feedback on new strategic ideas and products from the team members. Manage team members to ensure that internal and external interactions with customers are appropriate, due to the sensitive nature of Swift's business. Coach team on internal / external politics, sensitivities, etc. Plan yearly thought leadership deliverables and monitor delivery on a regular (approximately monthly) basis. Oversee process and approve drafted materials for 10-20 thought leadership pieces per year, including whitepapers, discussion papers, and board reports.
[5] Create, adjust, and drive implementation of our organization's short-term and long-term strategic goals and change management activities (10%): As Swift's product team develops product roadmaps, business cases, and implementation plans, the Head of Securities Strategy will ensure that these items do not contradict or deviate from the Securities Strategy that he has designed. Engage with clien ts and the market to assess the relevance of the product plans and market implementation priorities. Hold workshops and meetings to assess priorities, as well as proposals to change product and strategy, in working groups, product pilots, innovation sprints, and regular governance consultation. Meet with business development and product teams to assess the understanding and buy-in on roadmaps, as well as delivery status versus plans. Meet with the Swift chief executive per region, heads of business development in each region, strategic relationship managers for the business development team. Work with Swift's Chief Product Officer, tribe leads, and product owners, as well as with the Chief Innovation Officer and underlying teams. Review teams' status of deliverables versus plans, and determine whether team members are appropriately engaging with clients and internal colleagues, contributing to deliverables, and resolving issues.
[6] Be a guardian of the strategy operating model and act as an internal consultant and change agent for the organization (10%): Define Swift's strategic vision along business, customer, and market segments. Execute strategic activities supporting the vision through programs, thought leadership, and corporate development; initiate, manage, and supervise liaisons and contacts with internal and external stakeholders. Represent and position Swift to the external market on a senior level. Turn the vision into concrete business and market plans with clear ambitions supported by industry vision groups. Ground the decisions and directions into market facts and scenario planning. Perform due diligence for execution, risk, and monitoring. Oversee enterprise risk assessments on strategy projects following the company's risk assessment framework, monitor the status of initiatives against original strategy plans - product deliveries and product adoption. Monitor team's deliverables on risk assessment following Swift's risk management framework.
[7] Hire, reward, coach, motivate and develop a diverse team in order to have qualified, competent and motivated employees (10%): Interview and onboard new employees on the Securities strategy team; conduct performance appraisals with staff; coach employees in areas where they need to develop; and address performance issues and concerns during regular individual employee meetings.
[8] Prepare, propose, substantiate, and manage budget. Provide controls, report, and explain deviations; prepare corrective actions. Have accountability for the operational and financial performance (5%): Manage a budget pertaining to around 6 full-time high-level employees, as well as a substantial accompanying travel budget and consulting / advising budget. Evaluate, hire, and fire as needed in team. Approve travel and consulting expenditures.
May also partially work from home in accordance with company policy.
Position requires up to 20% domestic and international travel, including but not limited to Central / South America, Europe, and Asia.
Minimum required: Position requires bachelor's degree in business, finance, IT, or related field (or foreign equivalent). Position requires 5 years of experience as a senior or lead market analyst, senior or lead securities analyst, or closely related role. With respect to required experience, 5 years of Securities or markets experience should have covered trends, client engagement, formulation of strategic options and company strategies as a senior market analyst or managing product lifecycle, product execution and market structure. Position additionally requires 2 years of experience with product management and strategic relationship management. Position requires 1 year experience with each of the following: Microstrategy (Watch for Securities and Swift Watch); transaction tracking (Swift gpi); transaction manager (Swift transaction management platform); Swift Alliance Suite; SwiftRef; and financial crime and compliance portfolio (KYC, Payments Control, Sanctions, and Name Screening).
NEW YORK APPLICANTS ONLY: The estimated salary range for a new hire into this position in New York is $232,398 to $270,000 USD. Salary may vary depending on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location.
