Job description

Head Lifeguard

Responsible for the safety and health of guests in the aquatic area.

The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all-inclusive:

In the absence of a Pool Manager: Responsible for staffing the aquatic area with the appropriate amount number of Lifeguards and the overall supervision of the aquatics area; Assign guards as conditions warrant; Ensure cleaning and maintenance of aquatic areas are performed; assist as needed; test and make adjustments to water chemistry to meet health codes; may act as problem solver between students/instructor or guard/patrons during programming times.

Provide excellence in customer service. Deal with customer concerns/problems using good judgment and professionalism; report any customer and staff problems to the Pool Manager. Cooperate with user groups for pool space and time.

Enforce all City policies, pool rules, and regulations involving the operation of the pool.

Assist with staff training and development. Responsible for setting a good example for all aquatic employees in conduct, dress, and manners.

Conduct routine safety checks of equipment and staff; assist in the assurance of accurate, complete, and timely filing of all paperwork, i.e., incident reports, water chemical reports, attendance records, maintenance, cleaning, and current inventory of pool supplies. Perform Lifeguarding, lifeguard duties such as pool maintenance and cleaning, staff audits and in-service training.

Continuously scan pools for distressed patrons; enforce all rules and policies; perform rescues and administer First Aid according to standards; respond quickly to emergencies make decisions on incidents and actions as required.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES: Assist in maintenance/opening/closing of seasonal facilities. Perform related work as required and assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direct supervision of the Aquatic Coordinator and general supervision of the assigned Recreation Supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Acts as "Lead" worker, giving oversight to assigned staff.

INDEPENDENCE OF ACTION: Work is performed by following established procedures and well-defined standard practices requiring some authority to select which methods are applicable in any given situation. Finished work is reviewed for accuracy, quality, and completeness. Matters not explicitly covered in operating instructions are reviewed with the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge - CPR, Lifeguard and First Aid; knowledge of departmental rules concerning the area in which assigned; and of Lifeguard philosophies, policies and procedures; teaching methods and techniques. Skills - Public relations skills; demonstrated skill in operating equipment necessary to perform job functions. Abilities - Prevent accidents; remain calm in emergency situations; work with little or no supervision; analyze and correct facility safety hazards; learn and adhere to the facility emergency procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships; plan, organize, instruct and supervise the assigned program as needed; meet criteria as described in Working conditions/Physical and Mental Effort section of this document.

EVIDENCE OF QUALIFICATIONS:

Training - Certified Lifeguard.

Experience - Two (2) years of previous aquatics experience

OR

Any equivalent combination of training and experience provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Current Certifications in Lifeguard Training - (Starguard Elite or equivalent) nationally recognized certification "deep water" Infant/Child/Adult CPR/AED WSI or swim instruction certification. Lifeguard training instructor certification required within three months of hire.

EQUIPMENT USED: All equipment available and necessary to adhere to the Lifeguard policies and procedures, including water rescue and safety equipment, kickboards, diving rings, whistle, pool buoys, life jackets, pool, pump, filter, cleaning and testing equipment, pool vacuum, and chemical handling equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT: Work is primarily performed in hot, wet, and humid environments with a chemical smell. During the summer, work may be at an outdoor facility and will include exposure to all types of weather. Work requires the strength and stamina necessary to rescue distressed swimmers. The job requires extended periods of hearing and speaking; it requires working in chemically treated water. The position requires public relations skills in handling parental concerns and complaints. The work also entails working closely with co-workers and cooperating in utilizing the various areas of the pool. Must be able to work in an environment with poor acoustics array of distractions, i.e., music and weather conditions,. Work involves climbing, frequent sitting, intermittently sitting, stand ing, or stooping, standing or walking; requires the ability to lift objects of less than 24 lbs and occasionally weigh up to and over 50 lbs. Work requires considerable muscular exertion and/or physical strain, as well as continuous intense mental concentration and visual attention.
