The City of Valdez is accepting applications for Head Librarian. This position, under general supervision of the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Director, directs the functions and staff of the Valdez Consortium Library, a joint public and college library.
Required Qualifications: Preferred qualification is a Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program and three (3) years library work experience including one (1) year in a supervisory capacity. Minimum qualifications include Bachelor's Degree in related field and eight (8) years library work experience including five (5) year in a supervisory capacity; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed above.
This is a fully benefited, FLSA-Exempt position working a minimum of 40 hours per week. The City of Valdez offers a competitive pay, incentive, and benefit package to include:

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Leads the Valdez Consortium Library through staff support, facility management, and librarianship principles to ensure exemplary services for the community.
  • Oversees daily operations of the Valdez Consortium Library; develops and evaluates programs, goals, and objectives.
  • Provides direction to library staff, meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve any issues, and evaluates staff performance.
  • Leads by example and models responsibility, accountability, and service to the community.
  • Develops and sustains an organizational culture that fosters open communication, patron-centered services, learning and innovation, accountability, teamwork, and trust.
  • Recruits and supervises library personnel.
  • Develops and establishes programs, policies, procedures, and systems for the library's collections, services, and automation needs.
  • Selects adult library materials, including books purchased for the library collection using Prince William Sound College (PWSC) funds in accordance with the consortium library agreement.
  • Works closely with the Prince William Sound College administration and staff in program planning and the delivery of library services to the college and serves as liaison between the City and PWSC. Selects and catalogs new adult library materials and determines items for de-selection based on common weeding standards.
  • Provides instruction on academic research and collection/Internet searches.
  • Develops and monitors the library budget; prepares special and recurring reports; prepares grant applications and manages grant compliance issues; collects and maintains statistical information and compiles data for reports.
  • Represents the Valdez Consortium Library to federal, state, and local service organizations, City departments and events, and community organizations and businesses.
  • Collaborates and provides outreach to community organizations and events.
  • Monitors library use and trends and utilizes information to update services the library provides
  • Assists with maintaining library social media and website.
  • Showcases ability to develop, conduct, and expand successful adult programming as needed.
  • Manages payroll, weekly deposits, and p-card reconciliations.
  • Advocates for the library at local, state, and federal levels.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
Knowledge of:
  • Librarianship principles, frameworks, and techniques; including leadership, collection development, programming, record management, and advocacy.
  • State and national resources for library programs and management.
  • Budgets and grant program management.
  • High degree of computer literacy including integrated library systems, Microsoft Office, and social media.
  • Experience in designing and delivering patron-focused programs and services.
  • Department and City and policies and procedures.
Skill in:
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks and projects.
  • Supervision, coordinating staff and delegating tasks and authority.
  • Managing public relations and community education programs, including maintenance of social media and library website.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with library staff, community members, patrons, volunteers, other City department representatives, and state and local government agency representatives.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in an office environment.
