Job description

Piper High School is seeking a head coach for its Football program. Timeline for the application process is as followed:

  • November 10-December 4: Applications Accepted
  • December 6-8: First Round of Interviews
  • December 13-15: Panel Interviews and Final Selection
  • January 8: Board of Education Approval

Essential Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions, to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect, and good sportsmanship
  • Use a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student athletes in football
  • Coordinate the development and promotion of the Football Program
  • Hold organizational meetings for team prospects and encourage potential athletes to participate in the football program
  • Work with other members of school staff to plan and put in place instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student athletes.
  • Ensure all Football Coaches work together toward a common goal within the football program and provide unity within the youth community programs.
  • Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students' athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis.
  • Develop a regular practice schedule and organize practice time to provide both individual and team development.
  • Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation
  • Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and while on trips off school property.
  • Encourage sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation at all times
  • Instruct and advise students on NCAA regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices
  • Assist student athletes with college recruitment
  • Assist the Athletic Director with the scheduling of games and coordinate arrangements
  • Act as a team representative and promote the sport by communicating with the news media, booster clubs, service clubs, and other organizations
  • Participate in special activities to include senior night, banquets, award nights and pep assemblies
  • Conferences with parents/guardians, as necessary, regarding athletic performance of their student
  • Represent Piper High School, the Piper School District and the Football program in a professional manner
  • Maintain nondiscriminatory practices in all activities
  • Attend professional development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or other appropriate administrator
  • Fulfill roles and responsibilities as directed by the school's administration including, but not limited to, adherence to district guidelines for fundraising, trips, money management, honoring of contracts, credit card use and transportation (buses, rental vehicles, and school/district owned vehicles
  • Conduct a pre-season meeting with parents in order to communicate all important information including, but not limited to, expectations/criteria for participation, sportsmanship guidelines, practice and game schedules, district guidelines for transportation, insurance, handling of injuries including concussions, parent-coach communication, substance abuse guidelines, lettering guidelines and additional responsibilities noted in job posting. Provide this information to all participants and the school administration
  • Teach and Coach in a positive and constructive manner
  • Maintain a professional attitude in all situations and adhere to the district's guiding principles for coaches
  • Provide an environment that promotes good sportsmanship
  • Comply and communicate to participants/parents all USD #203 Board Policies, including the fact that the Student Code of Conduct is in effect during and at all activities
  • Ensure all team members understand the dangers associated with hazing and ensure that no initiation or hazing activities take place
  • Delegate roles and responsibilities to assistant coaches
  • Report all statistics and team information to the media and league representatives on a timely basis
  • Monitor the safety of equipment, playing surfaces, and performance environments
  • Maintain an inventory of equipment and submit order requests as needed
  • Understand and implement the duties of any coach including, but not limited to, maintaining detailed practice plan, never leaving athletes unsupervised, providing detailed and repeated instruction with regards to the performance of high-risk activities, adhering to the district's lightning and hot weather guidelines, and the evaluation of injuries and lack of physical conditioning
  • Comply with all KSHSAA and USD #203 rules and regulations including, but not limited to, participant eligibility, required physical examinations, rules meeting attendance, rules test requirements, timely completion of all KSHSAA paperwork, district substance abuse policy, and other KSHSAA Handbook Guidelines
  • Provide tagging information to school personnel on a timely basis
  • Complete Assistant Coach Evaluations on a timely basis in accord with district timelines and expectations

Additional Knowledge/Skills/Attributes:
Knowledge:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the game is paramount
  • Extensive knowledge of current coaching techniques and procedures
  • Knowledge of KSHSAA rules
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct and supervise student-athletes

Skills:
  • The applicant must possess the ability to communicate in spoken and written word
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • The applicant must possess the ability to relate to students and to teach them on and off the field
  • The applicant must be willing to accept a high level of accountability
  • The applicant must possess the ability to assess players and coaches effectively

  • The applicant should be a progressive thinker but a believer in planning and preparation
