Position Description

A HazMat Technician is a certified task-level position that performs technician-level duties in accordance with national standards and the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. The position of HazMat Technician may include the role of a peace officer if the individual holds a valid TCOLE license. A HazMat Technician reports to a HazMat supervisor and may report to other Senior Staff members depending on assignment, and may work from either office or field location, depending on work assignment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Have a working knowledge of recognized standards for hazardous material response, structural firefighting, fire inspections, fire investigations, fireworks, and fire and life safety hazards, including LGC. 352.016.
  • Responds to various emergency calls including structural and environmental fires, traffic collisions, transportation emergencies, hazardous material incidents, and medical assistance within the level of training and certification for force protection only.
  • Connects, extends, and operates hose lines and related appliances for firefighting operations including firefighting foam and other extinguishing agent applications. Individual performs search and rescue tasks, utilizing hand and power tools, hydraulic tools, portable saws, power generators, ropes, webbing, and other extrication equipment.
  • Performs ventilation or entry operations, with the use of hand or power tools; raises, lowers, and climbs ladders to access buildings, structures, or containers and vessels; makes forcible entry into and enters burning structures or other hazardous environments.
  • Provides medical aid to injured persons within the scope of practice that is allowed by local Emergency Medical Services or departmental authority, operates any and all related emergency medical equipment that may be provided, and is allowed within the approved scope of practice.
  • Attends and/or instructs training courses involving firefighting, medical aid, rescue, Hazardous Materials, equipment operation, and maintenance; participates in drills and exercises; studies local conditions and factors affecting emergency response operations or emergency hazard mitigation; has a working knowledge of departmental policies, safety procedures, inspection regulations, and prevention rules; maintains physical fitness and fit for work health.
  • If certified to do so, assists with the inspection of commercial and public buildings to ensure compliance with fire codes and inspection standards.
  • Participates in local fire prevention programs by presenting or preparing presentations; performing station tours, and other public education activities to promote fire safety and public awareness.
  • Ensures quality, accuracy, and timely completion of assigned tasks including program management in accordance with HCFMO policies and procedures.
  • . * Performs administrative functions in accordance with policies and procedures, including completing, reviewing, and maintaining records and reports and development of summary data reports, as required.
  • Understands operations within an incident management system during emergency response operations and may serve as a member of an Incident Management Team during emergency or disaster situations. * Maintains situational awareness of all HCFMO activities.
  • Serves on committees, boards, councils, commissions, or other teams as assigned by the Fire Marshal.

Requirements

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited educational institution.
Licensure:
  • At the date of hire, possess a valid license driver’s license, State of Texas Class C.
  • Within the first year, the candidate must obtain a valid State of Texas Class B Exempt license.
  • At the time of appointment as a HazMat Technician, shall be certified by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (“TCFP”) as a Structural Firefighter.

Applicants for this position will be subject to a criminal background check that includes being fingerprinted. This applies to any position with network access to Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) or access to an area where CJIS is received, maintained or stored either manually or electronically (i.e. custodian, maintenance).
Automatic Disqualification:
  • Convictions, probation, or deferred adjudication for any Felony, and any Class A Misdemeanor
  • Convictions, probation, or deferred adjudication for a Class B Misdemeanor, if within the previous 10 years
  • Open arrest for any criminal offense (Felony or Misdemeanor)
  • Family Violence conviction

Preferences

  • At the time of appointment as a HazMat Technician, shall be certified by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (“TCFP”) as a Hazmat Technician.
  • Certified Fire Instructor I.
  • Certified Driver Operator.
  • Certified NFPA 472 Incident Commander.

General Information

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
  • Regular Part-time
  • 24 Hours per Week | Up to 300 hours per year
  • Various Shifts: To Include Nights, Weekends & Holidays
Salary:
  • $28.11 Hourly
  • Based on 26 Pay Periods

Employment is contingent upon passing a background check and drug screen.
