Responsibilities of the Student Specialist include (but are not limited to the following):
Jayhawk JumpStart Student Leader:
- Serve as a group facilitator and positive role model for up to 35 JumpStart participants.
- Facilitate activities and sessions for JumpStart participants focused on developing a sense of community and belonging as assigned
- Serve as a resource to answer questions and support students in their transition to KU.
- Participate in all required JumpStart programming planning, set up, facilitation and clean up
- Must be available 40 hours that align with the JumpStart program schedule, plus be available the week before for training.
Academic Year Peer Support:
- Provide support for students throughout the academic year by communicating with students utilizing phone calls, text messages and e-mails in accordance with guidance from Hawk Link Coordinators. Student Leaders working JumpStart will connect with their Jumpstart Students throughout the academic year.
- Meet one-on-one with students as directed by Hawk Link Coordinators to follow up on goals, have conversations around academic development, campus engagement, and general interests.
- Conduct study sessions and develop small workshops for students around academic supports.
- Maintain accurate notes of meetings and conversations with students utilizing Jayhawk GPS
- Refer students to campus resources or escalate back to Hawk Link Coordinators when appropriate
Additional Responsibilities:
Event Assistance
- Includes event development, planning, communication and marketing
- Event execution including event and materials preparation, and tear down
- Front desk management including answering phones, greeting visitors, checking and responding to global email inbox
- Collecting and managing data, assisting with research
- Accurately report time worked utilizing KU's timesheet system
- Actively participate in training including online training, in-person training at the beginning of each semester, and ongoing leadership development opportunities
- Meet one-on-one with your supervisor twice a month to provide updates you your general wellbeing, work goals and professional development
- Attend staff meetings for program updates
- Monitor and respond to messages in Hawk Link e-mail in a timely fashion
