Summary Statement:


The Arizona Department of Public Safety is seeking knowledgeable and experienced law enforcement officers to staff the Major Incident Division (MID).

This division was established to perform criminal investigations of critical incidents involving the discharge of a firearm by a peace officer due to a use of force encounter.


The Group Supervisor is responsible for the daily supervision of Agents, Detectives, and associated support staff who conduct specialized criminal investigations or other related police operations.

Performs related duties as assigned.
The incumbent serves at the pleasure of the Director of the Department of Public Safety.

Essential Functions (not intended to be all inclusive):
  • Plans, schedules, coordinates, and supervises the work of sworn officers and civilian personnel.
  • Reviews the work of assigned personnel to ensure compliance with Department policies and procedures. Accompanies Agents during the performance of their duties to observe and evaluate performance. Reviews reports of assigned personnel for accuracy, completeness, and conformance to established standards.
  • Evaluates employee performance and identifies deficiencies and/or training needs. Provides or arranges for necessary instruction. Initiates discipline when appropriate. Prepares performance appraisals and supporting documentation.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and attainment of Department goals and objectives in assigned area.
  • Evaluates activities of assigned area and recommends improvements and modifications.
  • Develops and maintains an expertise in law enforcement useofforce.
  • Locates witnesses and evidentiary items, and documents information for criminal investigations.
  • Conducts interviews of witnesses, suspects, victims, and others.
  • Conducts crime scene investigations.
  • Conducts investigations which may involve complex investigative procedures or covert responsibilities; testifies in court as required.
  • Conducts internal administrative investigations as assigned.
  • Composes extensive reports, memos, and other correspondence.
  • Reviews and serves search warrants, court orders, legal process and/or documents as required.
  • Makes presentations for internal and external customers.
  • Prepares a variety of reports (statistical, activity, administrative, etc.) as required.
  • Works with other law enforcement agencies in planning and coordinating investigations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- crime scene and criminal investigation methods and procedures.
- principles and practices of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
- federal, state, and local laws governing traffic and crime, search and seizure activities, the rules of evidence and applicable court decisions.
- department mission statement, goals and objectives, organizational structure, functions and resources.
- department policies and procedures.
- department computerized and manual records and tracking systems.
SKILL IN:
- the use and care of firearms and related police equipment.
- the operation of a police vehicle in ordinary and adverse situations.
ABILITY TO:
- communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
- analyze situations under stressful conditions and adopt effective courses of action.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of assignment.
Minimum Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Requires twenty (20) years of law enforcement experience and one (1) year of supervisory experience in an organization with investigative responsibilities.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:


Must possess and maintain AZ POST certification as a sworn peace officer or the ability to obtain AZPOST Peace Officer certification within sixty (60) days of appointment.

Must pass AZPOST firearms qualification course.
Must pass 2-mile walk in under 40 minutes.
Must demonstrate ability to walk up twelve flights of stairs.
Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver license at the time of employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous experience in homicide investigation and officer involved shootings.
Eight (8) years of assignments in an investigative detail.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Office and/or field settings.
Must be able to move items weighing up to 50 pounds each, in compliance with OSHA regulations.
May be required to respond to crime scenes or critical incidents.
May be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, fumes, or dust, toxic or caustic chemicals or bodily fluids.
