Group Fitness Instructor - Mat Pilates, Group Cycle, Yoga

Job Summary

The chief function of the Group Fitness Instructor is to provide a safe, comfortable and motivating class for all fitness levels. The Group Fitness Instructor must have a genuine interest in the development of the fitness and well-being of the staff, members and guests.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

This position requires the incumbent to possess:

1. Knowledge and understanding of fitness principles and their application to the group setting.

2. Group Fitness Instructor certification or other aerobic certification (ACE, AFAA, NASM, LES MILLS, or similar) is required before or within three months of hire date. The YMCA can help facilitate certification.

3. Willingness to undergo training when necessary.

4. On-the-job training by the Group Fitness Coordinator is required before teaching a class.

5. CPR/AED Certification is required or must be obtained before teaching begins.

6. The nature of the position requires medium physical effort such as setting up equipment, lifting and continuous aerobic exercise.

7. Group Fitness Instructors should be good decision makers/problem solvers in conjunction with established policy.

Responsibilities

1. Instructors should encourage questions and socialization before and after class.

2. Instructors are responsible for documenting class attendance.

3. Instructors must communicate member needs to the Group Fitness Coordinator

4. Instructors need to provide an adequate warm-up and cool-down period with stretching of all major muscle groups during each class period.

5. Instructors should provide and effective, safe and challenging workout routine for the type of exercise class that they are instructing.

6. Instructors must conduct a heart rate check approximately half-way through the class period, depending on class structure.

7. Instructors should be a resource for information on fitness, health and correct methods of exercise for all participants.
