- Operates walk behind and riding mowers
- Operates hand held motorized equipment such as string trimmers & chain saws;
- Operates large motorized equipment such as brush chippers, stump grinders, tractors, etc.
- Performs custodial tasks in cleaning outdoor facilities restrooms & picnic shelters;
- Works in snow removal operations as assigned;
- Prunes and installs landscape plants and trees;
- Performs landscape maintenance such as weeding, pruning, mulching, etc.
- Uses hand tools such as rakes, shovels, hoes, bush axes and other ground maintenance tools;
- Applies fertilizers;
- Assists in the maintenance of athletic fields, turf areas, landscaped beds, and other grounds areas;
- Loads & unloads material such as gravel, dirt, mulch, chemicals, tools, equipment and other materials;
- Assists in work zone traffic control setup;
- Directs traffic at construction sites as a certified flagger;
- Performs litter collection;
- Performs leaf collection activities operating a variety of equipment;
- Completes necessary documentation such as work orders & logs;
- Uses blueprints, maps & manuals to perform work; interprets written & oral instructions;
- Follows all safety precautions;
- Participates in training;
- Communicates effectively and courteously with customers, peers and others;
- Actively participates in team activities such as problem solving & planning;
- Works various schedules as assigned;
- Performs other duties as necessary.
- Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
- When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED);
Grounds Maintenance experience preferred.
- Possession of valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and an acceptable driving record based on City criteria
- Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License in 45 days or employment;
- Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License within 90 days of employment;
- Ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License with a year.
- Ability to obtain chemical applications certificate;
- Relevant background checks must be completed and approved.
- Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training wihtin 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
